Winter Session
Dates and Cancellations
There
will be no workouts on: Fri Apr 10th, Sat Apr 11th, or Mon
Apr 13th (Easter). As the session ends Apr
16/17th, this means that there are no more Saturday workouts this
term.
The building will be open Holiday
Hours (8am-8pm) Fri Apr 10th through Mon Apr 13th
inclusive. That means just one public swim each day: 12:30-3:30pm, with a
women’s swim Sun 11:35am-12:25pm. The fitness centre will be open
9am-7pm.
The Winter session will
end Thu Apr 16th
(evening groups) / Fri Apr
17th (morning groups). The Spring session will start
Mon May 4th. Note that there will be no interim workouts
between the Winter and Spring sessions as the pool will be drained for annual
maintenance. Note that all the Carleton Athletic
facilities are closed Sat Apr 18th through Sun May 3rd,
inclusive.
Spring / Summer
Masters Sessions
The Spring Masters session will
start on Mon May 4th.
Registration starts Mon Apr
6th.
Note that a new CLASS
registration system is being introduced for programs. An e-mail will be
sent to all members with details on how to set up an account for this system.
As this is a new system, there could be a few problems, and you may want
to wait until later this coming week to register on-line, by phone, or in
person. For now, memberships (required for all Masters programs) must
still be purchased by phone or in person. The Athletics Customer Service
office hours are 8:30am to 4:30pm and phone number is 613-520-4480, or
613-520-2600 x4480.

Mon Mar 30th became the
impromptu “first annual” 200 fly challenge, when Sandy Lawson (7:30am Earlybirds) challenged
lane-mates Dawn Walsh and Tamsin Douglas to complete the workout’s
200 fly legally (all full stroke). I extended the challenge to the 8:30am
Earlybirds, 6pm Whitecaps 1, and 7:10pm Whitecaps 2. Certificates were
presented to the 6pm swimmers on Thu Apr 2nd, and to the Earlybird
swimmers on Fri Apr 3rd. The 7:10pm swimmers will get their
certificates on Monday. If you didn’t get a chance to participate, it’s
not too late – just ask your coach! While the emphasis was on completing
the distance, not doing a fast time, for the record, the fastest swimmers were
Madelayne De Grace (3:32) and
Damien Ponech (3:35). Here

Ask the
Coach
Dear Coach:
Some swim fins
are cut straight across, some have various degrees of slant to them, and some
are V-shaped. Is there any research to support which way the slanted fins
should be worn (e.g. wide part out like a dolphin tail, wide part in like a
human foot)? Fin Collector
Dear F.
Collector: I wasn’t able to find any articles to directly answer your
question. I wear mine the “dolphin” way, because this means the tips hit
together less, as I try to kick pigeon-toed. However, I did find some
interesting articles on different fin
shapes:
- Overview from
Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swimfin
-
Dolphin-inspired fins from Scientific American: http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=dolphin-inspired-man-made-fin
- Force Fins:

recommendations as to where I can swim during the pool shutdown? Keen
