Swimmer Notes

Swimmer Updates:

Karen Jensen (7:30am Earlybirds) is hosting a baby shower for Jill Patrick (7:30am Earlybirds) and Jose Vivanco (6pm Whitecaps I) on Sat Apr 25th starting at 5pm.  All are welcome (kids, spouses, grandparents, everyone)!  Here are the details: Where: 19 Ardell Grove in Craig Henry; Phone: (613) 226-6226.  What to bring: (1) swim suit and towel (their pool will be heated to bath-like temp’s); (2) food – everyone whose last name starts with the letters A-H brings a dessert, I-P brings a main course, Q-Z brings a salad; (3) money for a group gift (to be determined) for Jill and Jose; (4) optional: little gift for the wee babe.

Christiane Guibord (6pm Whitecaps 1) had surgery on Mon Apr 6th to repair her broken pinky finger and is now recovering well.

On Wed Apr 15th, Flo Shinder (x-8:30am Earlybirds) visited the pool to see the Earlybirds.  It was great to see her looking so well.  You’d never guess that she is still recovering from fracturing her shoulder and hip.  Flo is moving to Montreal this summer.  We’ll miss her!!

Linda Rossman (7:30am Earlybirds) organized a reunion for the women in her first year University of Waterloo residence floor this past summer: http://alumni.uwaterloo.ca/alumni/spotlight/profiles/linda_rossman_09.html.  Sounds like it was a lot of fun!

There were 41 women (this is a record!) and 17 men who improved in at least one event.  The biggest improvement overall was by Ken Johnson (6pm Whitecaps 1) who improved his 100bk by 26.4 seconds (26.4sec/100m)!!  The largest improvement among the women was by Carol Alexander (8:30am Earlybirds) who improved her 50fs by 8.0 seconds (16.0sec/100m).  She was followed closely by Linda Rossman (7:30am Earlybirds) who improved her 200fs by 31.2 seconds (15.6sec/100m).  Others improving by over 10sec/100m were: Siobhan Welsh (8:30am Earlybirds): 56.8 seconds in 400fs (14.2sec/100m); Mary Jane Phillips (7:10pm Whitecaps 2): 1:53 in 800fs (14.1sec/100m); Irene Marushko (7:30am Earlybirds): 55.7 seconds in 400fs (13.9sec/100m), Sebastien Robillard-Cardinal (6pm Whitecaps 1): 12.8 seconds in 100bk (12.8sec/100m), and Iyad Abbas (7:30am Earlybirds): 47.3 seconds in 400fs (11.8sec/100m).  Honourable mention goes to Carla Sowinski (8:30am Earlybirds) who again improved in no less than 6 different events!  Brad Shapansky and Linda Rossman (both 7:30am Earlybirds) improved in 5 events.

The International Point Scores (link to web page below) are used to determine the best swims.  There were 11 women and 8 men scoring 400 points or above in at least one event.  Mihai Mateescu (6pm Whitecaps I) was top point scorer with 609 points for 27.2 in 50fs.  Hilary March (6pm Whitecaps 1) was just one point behind with 608 points for her 30.7 50fs.  Also scoring over 500 points were Heather Macdonald (6pm Whitecaps 1) with 599 for 5:49.1 in 400IM, Joanna Brown (Nightcaps) with 528 for 21:32 in 1500fs, and Gi Wu (6pm Whitecaps 1) with 502 for 29.4 in 50fs.  Don Wells (6pm Whitecaps 1) scored over 400 points in 6 different events.  Tricia Gerrow and Pete Lithgow (both 6pm Whitecaps I) scored over 400 points in 5 events.

This term the “team spirit” award goes to Francois Audet (7:30am Earlybirds).  He was nominated by Karen Jensen (7:30am Earlybirds) for adjusting his pace times so she could keep up, and encouraging her to stay in his lane and work on her breaststroke.

Masters Swimming Competitions

You must register annually with Masters Swimming Ontario (MSO) if you want to compete in Masters Swimming competitions.  Registration for 2008-2009 is now underway.  The main club registration mailing is now in.  However, it’s not too late for you to pay the $36 (including $1 postage/handling) by cash or cheque payable to “Lynn Marshall”.  Your MSO membership will be good until Dec 31st, 2009.  Contact Lynn for more details.  Note that you must register with MSO at least 3 weeks before the due date of the entry for your first competition.

Full details on all Ontario Masters competitions can be found at: http://www.mastersswimmingontario.ca/competition/schedule01.htm

For Quebec competitions see: https://www.swimming.ca/MeetInfo.aspx, select FNQ <show>, upcoming meets, then the appropriate month, then select the appropriate Masters meet to get more info.  If it says “sanctioned” the meet package should be available.

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:

Dear Coach:  Can you repeat that list of pool URLs in the end of term newsletter?  Another Keen Swimmer

Dear A.K. Swimmer:  Sure!  Good (as in cool-ish water, adult swim times) city pools include Champagne, Plant, and Brewer.  Check out the schedules at: http://www.ottawa.ca/residents/parks_recreation/swimming/schedules/index_en.html.  Ottawa U also has pretty good public swim times, but their Winter schedule ends May 1st, so ask for the latest information if you plan to swim there after that: http://www.geegees.ca/sites/all/themes/geegees/schedules/swim_sched_2008_2009.pdf.

Dear Coach:  Will there be any other programs offered (as well as those listed below) for Spring/Summer 2009?  Am I too slow for the 6pm group?  Decisions, Decisions

Dear D. Decisions:  No, the list below if the full list of what is being offered.  All groups cater to a wide variety of abilities.  Anyone who can swim 1000m in an hours and who knows the basics of at least two competitive strokes, can join any Carleton Masters group.

Dear Coach:  Where’s a good place locally for swim wear and swim gear (e.g. pull buoys)?  Want New Stuff

Dear W.N. Stuff:  Locally, your best bets are Sports Experts and Motionware Source for Sports (Barrhaven).  Call ahead if you’re looking for something in particular.  Not really local, but Aquasport (http://www.aquasport.ca) in Montreal does phone and on-line orders.

Newsletter: An e-newsletter (like this one) is sent out about every two weeks.  If you have new lane-mates, please mention to them that they should give their e-mail address to their coach if they'd like to receive it.

Suggestions for Workouts or Interested in Making up a Workout or a Set?: If you have suggestions for the workouts (something you like that we never do, or something you dislike that we do too much!), or if you'd like to try making up a workout or a set in a workout, just talk to your coach.

Interested in Copies of the Workouts?: Are you interested in getting copies of Lynn's workouts ahead of time?  Let me know.  I usually e-mail out two week’s worth of workouts on alternate Sundays.  (Note that these are only the workouts that Lynn coaches.  If Lynn is not your coach, the workouts sent by e-mail will be different from the workouts your coach gives you!)

Weekly Social Events: All swimmers are invited to join us for:

- Thursday Dinner (after 6pm Whitecaps I workout: all year)

- Thursday Drinks (after 8:10pm Nightcaps workout: Sept-Apr)

- Saturday Brunch (after 9:30-10:30am workout: Sept-Jun; after 10:30-11:30am workout: July-Aug)

Meet by the Control Desk after workout.
