Carleton Hosts Congress 2009

From Sat May 23rd to Sun May 31st Carleton is hosting the 2009 Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences.  Over 8000 delegates will be at Carleton for this event which is pretty much taking over campus for the nine days that it is running.  The campus will likely be busy with parking and traffic more problematic than usual.  Registration and the book fair will be in the Fieldhouse.  More information at: http://www.carleton.ca/DUC/congresscountdown/

Swimmer Notes

Swimmer Updates:

 - Jill Patrick (x-7:30am Earlybirds) and Jose Vivanco (x-6pm Whitecaps I) report that Simon Patrick Vivanco was born by C-section at 2:57pm Fri May 15th weighing 8lbs 0.5oz.  Jill and Patrick went home on the 18th and the whole family is doing well.  Check out the photos at: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com/09photo/

 - Cheri Reddin (6pm Whitecaps) and her family are adopting a one year old Ethiopian boy.  Cheri will be travelling to Ethiopia in June to bring him home.  How exciting!

 - Amir Banihashemi (7:30am Earlybirds) is getting married on Fri Jul 3rd.  His bride, Atefeh, is a floral designer who will be relocating to Ottawa from Montreal.  Congratulations to you both!

 - Congratulations also to Debbie and Jim Lee (both 7:30am Earlybirds) who will be grandparents for the first time in November as their middle (of three) sons and his wife are expecting.

 - Karen Jensen (7:30am Earlybirds)’s younger daughter, Olivia, was bitten in the face by a dog on Sat May 9th.  However, she is making a great recovery and you can already hardly tell.

 - Congratulations to Charles McFarland (7:30am Earlybirds), director of the Third Wall Theatre’s Henry V, for a great review by Patrick Langston in the Sun May 10th Ottawa Citizen.  Here’s the first paragraph: “Short, theatrical and focused is what you can expect from Third Wall Theatre's production of Shakespeare's Henry V at the Irving Greenberg Theatre Centre. Directed by Charles McFarland and featuring performers from the inaugural year of Third Wall's Shakespeare Ensemble, the show's also darn good.”

Training Tool for Runners:  Mel Claude (6pm Whitecaps) told Eric Biklo (6pm Whitecaps) about “the stick” and he recommends it: http://www.shapeupshop.com/fitness/recovery/the_stick.htm

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  How do I figure out which direction my lane goes (i.e. up the left or up the right)?  Confused Swimmer

Dear C. Swimmer:  In the Carleton pool, the lane next to the diving well must go up the right due to safety considerations – swimming up the left would lead to head injuries on the “point”, especially on backstroke.  The corresponding lane (next to the sun deck) in the shallow end goes the same direction (up the right).  From there, the lanes alternate directions, so the lanes second from the diving well / sun deck go up the left, etc.

Dear Coach:  I understand that it’s important to roll my body in freestyle when I’m breathing, but why should I roll my body on the strokes when I’m not breathing?  A Freestyler

Dear A. Freestyler:  The freestyle body position (and arm position and leg position) should ideally be the same (or close to it) on all strokes, regardless of whether you are breathing or not.  The only thing that changes when you breathe is your head position.  If your body is flat in the water on the non-breathing strokes, you are in a much less streamlined position compared to rolling to your side.  Also, the motion of rolling from side to side generates a bit of propulsion.
