Newsletter Dates

Yes, it’s only been one week since the last newsletter, but the free Bushtukah “Bring on the Bay” entry is only available this week!  Unless there are other urgent items, it will be three weeks until the next edition.

Spring Session Dates and Summer Registration Reminder

The Spring session runs until Tue Jun 30th.  The Summer session starts Thu Jul 2nd.  The Athletics building is CLOSED on Wed Jul 1st.

As there are only two groups running in the summer, sign up soon to avoid disappointment.  There are currently just 4 spots left for the 6pm group, and 20 for the 7:30am group.

Free Bushtukah “Bring on the Bay” 3k Open Water Swim Race Entry!

Jim Wright (Technosport) has kindly donated a free entry to this event to our club.  Normal entry fee is $40-50.  Full details at: http://nsc.ca/easterseals/swim/.  MSO registration is not required for this swim.  The first Carleton Masters swimmer to reply asking for the free entry gets it!  (You must respond by Wed Jun 17th.)

Interested in Open Water Swim Races?

There are lots of open water swimming races coming up in and near Ottawa.  Many do not require MSO (Masters Swimming Ontario) registration or have any age restrictions.  See the list of Masters Swimming Competitions near the end of the newsletter for more details.

Swimmer Notes

Swimmer Updates:

 - Irene Marushko (7:30am Earlybirds) was interviewed by CBC radio on Thu Jun 11th due to her objection to the name just chosen for the street where she’s bought her new house.  It’s been named Madeleine Meilleur Private.  Check out the controversy at: http://cbc.ca/ottawa/media/audio/ottawamorning/20090611nick.ram.

 - After Anita Manley (x-Earlybirds, Whitecaps)’s report on her 10k race, several of you have asked what you can do to help Anita (who has been living in her car).  For a bit of background, here’s her interview on CFRA news from May 28th: http://www.cfra.com/chum_audio/Gord_McDougall_May28.mp3.  Anita does not have the funds for housing for the rest of June, but has enough money for other essentials.  Anita is currently staying with Evelyn Simpson (x-6pm Whitecaps) for a few nights.  If anyone else can offer Anita a roof for a short time, or even just some encouraging words, please contact Anita: anita_m_manley@hotmail.com.  Thanks to Evelyn for her help, and also to Siobhan Welsh (7:30am Earlybirds), who is hoping to help Anita with a job search.

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  When I come to the wall in breaststroke, I’m often in the middle of a stroke.  What should I do in that case?  Can I do a dolphin kick, or is that illegal?  Breaststroke Turner

Dear B. Turner:  A dolphin kick is indeed illegal.  In breaststroke, you want to finish on a long stroke (fully extended) at the finish, but on a short stroke (arms slightly bent) on the turn.  As you approach the wall (e.g. as you pass the flags) you need to judge where you are in you stroke relative to the wall, and, if necessary, lengthen or shorten your last few strokes so that you end up at the right point of the stroke for the turn or finish.  It takes practice to get this right all the time!

Dear Coach:  Is it legal to do a “grab” turn (i.e. grab the wall with my hands, instead of placing them flat on the wall)?  Grab Turner

Dear G. Turner:  Yes, “grab” turns are legal and recommended in pools like ours where the edge is right at the water level.  They don’t work so well when the wall / bulkhead is way above the water level (see next question).

Dear Coach:  How should I turn at pools where I can’t (easily) grab?  Another Turner

Dear A. Turner:  As you touch the wall with your palms, let your arm (or arms, depending on the stroke) bend slightly at the elbow to help you “stick” your hands to the wall.  The faster you go into your turn, the easier this will be.

Dear Coach:  How can I get further underwater off my turns?  Want Distance on my Turns

Dear W.D.o.m.Turns:  Push off hard in a streamlined position at a downwards angle.  As you start to slow down add in your kicks (or underwater pull for breaststroke) and accelerate to the surface.

Dear Coach:  Why are non-flip turns called “open” turns?  Just Curious

Dear J. Curious:  I couldn’t find any historical references to this term, so I’d guess it’s because when you do a non-flip turn, your head comes out of the water and you to get a breath on the turn.  That said, I’ve never heard anyone refer to a flip-turn as a “closed” turn!  If anyone has any suggestions, please pass on the info!
