Updates:
-
Congratulations to Rod Haney (6pm Whitecaps) on his June
22nd retirement after more than 46 years in international
development: 40 with the Public Service, the last
38+ with CIDA; 2 very early on with Trade & Commerce, and 6 with
the then fledgling CUSO.
- Charles McFarland (7:30am Earlybirds) has
been in the news a lot lately with the opening of the Shenkman Arts
Centre. Here’s an article and photo: http://www.sce.carleton.ca/courses/sysc-3303/s09/charlesmetro090616.pdf.
- Margaret King (8:30am Earlybirds) was
featured in the June Fifty-Five Plus magazine. She says great things about
our Masters program (and me) – thanks, Margaret! Check out the article at:
http://www.sce.carleton.ca/courses/sysc-3303/s09/margaret55+june09.pdf.
- The 8:30am group presented
Amir Banihashemi (8:30am
Earlybirds) with a card and gift for his wedding on Fri Jul
3rd. Amir says a big thank you to everyone! He’s not sure
if he’ll be at Friday’s workout, although we pointed out that his wedding is in
the afternoon so there isn’t a conflict J !

Since this race, Guy had the
unfortunate experience of driving into his garage with his bike still attached
to the roof of his car. If you ever mount your bike on the roof and have
an automatic garage door opener, he now recommends locking it in your glove box
so that this never happens to you!

Ask the
Coach
Dear Coach:
Can I still
sign up for the summer session? A
Procrastinator
Dear A.
Procrastinator: You can still sign up for the 7:30am group as there are
spots left. The 6pm group is currently full and we are starting a waiting
list.
Dear
Coach: I have
eczema and am quite sensitive to the pool chemicals but was wondering if anyone
else has been having problems with their skin lately? Swim
Rash
Dear S.
Rash: Sorry to hear about your eczema flaring up. The pool chemicals
have been within the normal range lately. However, there has been a high
bather load due to school groups at the end of the school year and with Sports
Camp starting up now. While I’m probably preaching to the choir, here are
some suggestions from my dermatologist to help with dry skin and eczema that are
made worse by swimming:
- get in the shower quickly after
your swim (don’t let the pool water dry on your
skin)
- wash in warm (not hot)
water
- avoid putting soap/bodywash on
affected areas
- pat skin dry (don’t
rub)
- put on moisturizer right away (or
right after you apply cortisone cream to affected areas)
