Summer / Fall Session Dates

The summer session ended Sat Sept 5th 10:30-11:30am.  There are no workouts Mon Sept 7th (Labour Day).  For those who want to work out on Monday, there is one public swim at Carleton 12:30-3:30pm, and the weight and cardio rooms are open 8am-7:30pm.

The Fall session starts Tue Sept 8th (evening groups) / Wed Sept 9th (morning groups).  Just a reminder that Saturdays return to the school year time of 8:30-9:30am OR 9:30-10:30am (your choice) starting Sat Sept 12th.  Note that while 6pm Whitecaps I is usually in the deep end on Tuesdays, we’ll be in shallow on Tue Sept 8th due to a water polo workout.

The workout themes for Fall are now posted on the bulletin board and web site.

Fall/Winter Program Information and Registration

Registration for Fall and Winter Masters has started.  Carleton Masters remain members-only programs. New for this year is that regular and morning memberships can be purchased on-line (approximately 5% convenience fee applies), and programs and memberships can now be purchased in person anytime the Athletics Building is open at the new “Welcome Centre” – currently under construction by the Control Desk.  You need to have your photo taken for your new membership card.  Programs are almost the same as last year, except that Nightcaps has been renamed Whitecaps III (times unchanged), and Safety Supervision will no longer be offered on Saturdays.

Dunrobin Kids of Steel Triathlon Update

Thanks to Liz McKeown (6pm Whitecaps) for providing this summary.  By all accounts, Bytown Storm Triathlon did a great job of co-organizing their first event, and their athletes also performed very well!

The Bytown Storm - YMCA Dunrobin Kids of Steel Classic was held under sunny skies, and boasted the toughest swim to bike transition in the province. This first event for the Bytown Storm Triathlon club was by all accounts a great success.  Triathletes from across Ontario came out to test their skills in what was an Ontario Games qualifying event for two Ontario regions.
The Ottawa region had 6 spots to fill (3 male / 3 female) with 5 of the 6 spots going to Storm triathlon team members.  Congratulations to Samantha Klus (6pm Whitecaps), Elyse Charrier and Alycia Fowler-McKeown (6pm Whitecaps) who finished 1, 2, 3 to secure all three female spots and to Jordan Simmons and Alex Maxwell (6pm Whitecaps) who took 2nd and 3rd in the male category.

Special thanks to Mits Kachi (Carleton Masters Coach) who volunteered to be the Swim Director and did an absolutely amazing job!

Swimmer Notes

Swimmer Updates:

 - Congratulations to Siobhan Welsh (7:30/8:30am Earlybirds) who successfully defended her M.A. Thesis at Carleton on Sept 3rd!

 - Congratulations also to Karen Jensen (7:30am Earlybirds) on her new job.  She is leaving the Human Rights Tribunal and will be the Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Common Law at the University of Ottawa starting Sept 14th.

 - Jen Lee (7:30am Earlybirds) is actually starting her Masters in Biochemistry at McMaster University this Fall.  My apologies for getting her program of study wrong last time!

- Best of luck to Stephanie Le Saux-Farmer (7:30am Earlybirds / x-6pm Whitecaps) who is starting first year at the University of Toronto.  (Steph is the daughter of Nicole Le Saux and Jim Farmer (both 7:30am Earlybirds / 7:10pm Whitecaps).)

 - Jonathon Moir (6pm/7:10pm Whitecaps) is going back to Kingston for his 4th year of Chemistry at Queens.  He’s planning to do some triathlons over the school year and will let us know how he does.

 - Best of luck to Francois Mathieu (6pm Whitecaps) who is competing in two back-to-back triathlons (this weekend and next).

- Lynn bumped into Andre Mainguy (x-6pm Whitecaps / 7:30am Earlybirds) at Centrepointe where he was volunteering at the second hand bookstore.  He is now training with the Pinecrest Masters as it is more convenient for him.  He says “bonjour” to everyone!

Summer Session Information

The last of the time trials of the Summer session were:

- Fri Aug 28th 200 or 400

- Tue/Wed Sept 1/2nd 100

- Thu/Fri Sept 3/4th relays

The only person to improve in the 200/400 time trials on Fri Aug 28th was Sean Grimes (7:30am Earlybirds) who improved his 400 free by 1.6 seconds.  Honourable mention to Lucie Boudreau (7:30am Earlybirds) who missed her best in 200 free by only 0.9 seconds.

In the 100 time trials on Tue Sept 1st / Wed Sept 2nd, there were lots of improvements.  Most improved was Romy Schaffenburg (6pm Whitecaps) who improved her 100fs by a whopping 10.4 seconds!  Joanna Brown (6pm Whitecaps) also had a big improvement, taking 4.0 off her 100fs.  Other improvements were by: Dawn Walsh (7:30am Earlybirds) 2.1 100fs; Alex Maxwell (6pm Whitecaps) 1.1 100fs; Jade Gregory (6pm Whitecaps) 1.0 100fs; Dave Bourdon (6pm Whitecaps) 0.9 100br; Christiane Wilke (7:30am Earlybirds) 0.6 100IM; Sean Dawson (6pm Whitecaps) 0.2 100fs

The Thu Sept 3rd / Fri Sept 4th relays were held in the shallow end for the 6pm group (with a large turnout), and there was just a small turnout for the 7:30am group.  Thus, there was just one improvement: Jonathon Moir (6pm Whitecaps) improved his 50fs by 0.8 seconds.  A few others were within one second of their best time: Alycia Fowler-McKeown (6pm Whitecaps) was just 0.1 over in her 50fs.  Joanna Brown (6pm Whitecaps) was 0.5 over in 50bk and 0.6 in 50fs.  Christiane Wilke (7:30am Earlybirds) was just 0.7 over in her 50fs.  Well done!

Summer Session Summary

First, a big thank you to: regular coach: Mits Kachi (6pm Whitecaps I, August) and the other Saturday coaches this term: Tim Kilby, and Blake Christie.

Thanks very much to the 7:30am Earlybirds for the card (selected by Colette Kenney) and chocolates (chosen by Margaret King) and to Dawn Walsh (7:30am Earlybirds) for the cookies!

Here's the summary of the attendance and time trials for the Summer session.  If you notice any errors or omissions, please do let me know.  Those of you who earned awards (best attendance, top 3 most improved overall, top 3 fastest overall, relay winners overall) will receive certificates early in the Fall term.

Attendance:

Due to vacations and “back to school” dates, there was no one with perfect weekday attendance for Summer.  The best attendance award goes to 6pm Whitecaps swimmer Romy Schaffenburg!  Well done, Romy!  Romy was also the most improved female swimmer this term (for the second term in a row).  Perhaps there’s a correlation?!

Masters Swimming Competitions

You must register annually with Masters Swimming Ontario (MSO) if you want to compete in Masters Swimming competitions.  Registration for 2008-2009 is now underway.  The main club registration mailing is now in.  However, it’s not too late for you to pay the $36 (including $1 postage/handling) by cash or cheque payable to “Lynn Marshall”.  Your MSO membership will be good until Dec 31st, 2009.  Contact Lynn for more details.  Note that you must register with MSO at least 3 weeks before the due date of the entry for your first competition.

Full details on all Ontario Masters competitions can be found at: http://www.mastersswimmingontario.ca/competition/schedule01.htm

For Quebec competitions see: https://www.swimming.ca/MeetInfo.aspx, select FNQ <show>, upcoming meets, then the appropriate month, then select the appropriate Masters meet to get more info.  If it says “sanctioned” the meet package should be available.

Here’s a list of upcoming competitions (mostly) in Ontario and Quebec.  More meets will be added as the information become available.  Note that meet entries and confirming meet information and entry dates are your responsibility.

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  What are the new racing suit rules for Masters as of Jan 1st, 2010?  Racing Swimmer

Dear R. Swimmer:  There will be a technical meeting of the FINA Masters Committee later this fall to discuss and finalize this.  We had been told that “anything goes” would be the Masters rule.  However, some want the same rules as regular FINA swimming (i.e. non-Masters).  However, some feel that extra coverage (for modesty and support of loose joints), plus fastenings (other than a drawstring) should be allowed for Masters.  See this newsletter’s articles links for some US opinions.

Newsletter: An e-newsletter (like this one) is sent out about every two weeks.  If you have new lane-mates, please mention to them that they should give their e-mail address to their coach if they'd like to receive it.

Suggestions for Workouts or Interested in Making up a Workout or a Set?: If you have suggestions for the workouts (something you like that we never do, or something you dislike that we do too much!), or if you'd like to try making up a workout or a set in a workout, just talk to your coach.

Interested in Copies of the Workouts?: Are you interested in getting copies of Lynn's workouts ahead of time?  Let me know.  I usually e-mail out two week’s worth of workouts on alternate Sundays.  (Note that these are only the workouts that Lynn coaches.  If Lynn is not your coach, the workouts sent by e-mail will be different from the workouts your coach gives you!)
