Fall Session
Dates / Updates
The Fall session runs until Fri Dec
18th.
Note that if you are
still planning to register for Fall, the 7:30am Earlybirds 1, 6pm Whitecaps 1,
and the 7:10pm Whitecaps 2 are full (waiting lists available). There is
still quite a bit of space in 8:30am Earlybirds 2 and 8:10pm Whitecaps 3.
For Winter, 6pm
Whitecaps 1 is full (waiting list available). All other groups have lots
of space. I will keep you updated.
Carleton Masters
Christmas Party
Once again Don Wells (6pm Whitecaps), Joanie Conrad (8:10pm Whitecaps), Sam and Ben (x-Safety Supervision) have kindly
agreed to host the holiday party at
Athletics Parking
Passes
Those of you with part-time
Athletics parking passes for parking lot 5 (i.e. passes purchased through
Athletics), please park in the pay-and-display area of lot 5 (near the
fieldhouse). These passes do not have bar codes and thus do not work in
the pass reader for the main lot 5 area.
Carleton Masters
Club History: Work in Progress!
Thanks to
those of you who have contributed yet more information. The new additions
are in blue. George has
provided me with a few photos from 1992-1994: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com/90sphotos/.
Next step is to identify the exact
dates and add all the names. We’d also like to produce a list of the
coaches, and who coached when.
Alan
Hunt (8:30am
Earlybirds)’s 20th
anniversary with Carleton Masters has led to many of you providing historical
information on the team! Thanks to all who have contributed to this
summary so far. We believe that
Mariette
Kenney (7:10pm
Whitecaps), Helen
Blais (x-6pm
Whitecaps), and Ursula
Scott (7:30am
Earlybirds) are those who have been involved with Carleton Masters since before
it started! This was likely back in 1982-1983 when Coach
Tim
Kilby was a
lifeguard. Prior to the start of Carleton Masters some stroke improvement
classes were offered, and shortly thereafter, possibly in January 1985 (or
perhaps the year before?), Carleton Masters started. Helen has offered to
get together with Mariette and Ursula to try to flesh this out a bit.
Don
Wells (6pm
Whitecaps) started with the team in Jan 1985.
Joanne and
I
believe the only group running at that time was the 6pm group.
Does anyone remember when the Sat am workouts started? Or exactly
when
the morning groups (7:30am and 8:30am) or 8pm Nightcaps started? The
7:10pm group started in Fall 2008.
Here’s a list of dates I have so far. Please send in more
information!

Swimmer Notes
- Thanks to Mary Donaghy (x-Nightcaps) for this update
on her husband. Greg spent 20
days in the hospital. They put 2 stents in one artery that had a few major
blockages. Then as an outpatient he went back to the Heart Institute to have a
further test with a special camera that was broken when he was in the hospital.
Unfortunately this test showed that another artery has a significant blockage.
He will need bypass surgery on this one and is awaiting an appointment with a
cardiovascular surgeon. Despite all this, kids are at school, Mary is working
and Greg is at home resting. He may even be able to go back to work pre-surgery
but he is off any real exercise.
- Congratulations to Val Walker (7:30am Earlybirds) on
successfully defending her Ph.D. Thesis yesterday. She got positive
feedback on both her thesis and the defense. Well done, Dr.
Walker!!

Ask the Coach
Dear Coach:
Passing practice didn’t work very
well in our lane due to a wide range of abilities. Is there something we
can do instead, next time? Frustrated with
Passing
Dear F.w. Passing: If ever a
set isn’t working out in your lane, let the coach know (at the time!), and we’ll
see what we can do to help. For the passing practice, the “alternate” set
for dysfunctional J lanes and those
without lane-mates, is to swim 50 mod / 25 FAST until you’ve done 400, to
simulate passing your imaginary friend 1/3 of the
time.
Dear
Coach: Why is it not permitted to do
a flip turn from backstroke to breaststroke in an IM? I Like
Flipping
Dear I.L. Flipping: The turns
where you change stroke in an IM are considered a finish of the first, followed
by the start of the second stroke. On a backstroke finish, you must touch
the wall on your back, so that rule applies also to the back/breast
turn.
Dear
Coach: How far can I go underwater
on my turns? Underwater Kicker
Dear
Coach: What’s the rule for the
breaststroke turn? A Breaststroker
Dear A. Breaststroker: You are
permitted to do one underwater stroke consisting of an arm movement where the
hands move from in front of you to your sides (like the underwater part of a
butterfly stroke) along with just one fly (dolphin) kick. From that
position, you are permitted to move your arms forward along with just one breast
kick to propel you to the surface. Your head must then break the surface
of the water before your arms reach the widest point of the first breast
pull.
