Announcements

Reminder: Carleton Masters Xmas Potluck Party: This is always a great feast and one of the highlights of the Carleton Masters Social Calendar!  It will be held on Saturday, December 1st, starting at 6:30pm at Don, Joanie, Sam and Ben's place (376 Hamilton Ave S).  Directions are posted on the bulletin board.  Masters from all groups (Early Birds, Whitecaps, and Night Caps) are most welcome!

End of Fall Session: Several swimmers have inquired when the Fall Masters Session ends.  The last workout for the Earlybirds is Wednesday, December 19th.  For the Whitecaps and Nightcaps the last workout is Thursday, December 20th.  The Winter session starts on Wednesday, January 2nd for the Earlybirds and on Thursday, January 3rd for the Whitecaps and Nightcaps.  If you are interested in "toonie" workouts over the Holidays, please let your coach know and if there is enough interest we'll set something up.

Update: Not-so-Hot Showers: Maintenance will take place in the women's showers on Tuesday, November 20th.  Please continue to let us know if there continue to be any problems!

Suggestions for Workouts or Interested in Making up a Workout or a Set?: If you have suggestions for the workouts or if you'd like to try making up a workout or a set in a workout, just talk to your coach.

Swim Team Fundraiser: The Carleton Varsity Ravens Swim Team (along with the other Varsity teams), is selling Senators Hockey Tickets for "Raven's Night" at the Corel Centre on Thursday, January 24th, 7pm, Senator's vs. the Boston Bruins.  The tickets (300s rows J-L, valued at $60) are being sold for $40, $10 of which goes towards the Varsity team.  Deadline for buying tickets is the end of November.  Contact Lynn if interested.

Waterpolo Team Fundraiser: The Carleton Men's Varsity Ravens Waterpolo Team is selling tulip bulbs as a fund raiser and in support of the 50th Anniversary of the Canadian Tulip Festival.  A "50th Anniversary Garden Box" (containing 50 tulip bulbs) costs $19.95 (buy 4, get a 5th free).  Again, let Lynn know if you are interested.

Race Reports (as usual, please let me know if I've missed anyone or any races!):

Caroline (Nightcaps) competed in the Brossard (Quebec) meet on October 27th and improved her times from the Ottawa U October 20th meet!  It was a big meet and she placed 2nd in 100 breast, 4th in 50 breast, 8th in 50 back and 10th in 50 fs.  Congratulations, Caroline!

A contingent of 8 Carleton Masters competed at the meet at Ottawa U on November 17th: Bernie, Isla, Jim, Andrew, and Gerry (Earlybirds), Dragos, and Caroline (Nightcaps), and Viktor (Whitecaps).

While the official results are not yet available, there were some great swims.  Viktor showed some awesome speed in the sprint free and breast events.  Gerry showed a great deal of determination in completing the 100fly!  Dragos did a very quick 100 breast.  Bernie set Club Records in every event he completed (200IM, 100 breast and 50 free)!  Andrew looked great in the 200IM.  Jim and Caroline each put together a very solid 200fs!  Isla was impressive in her many events including the 400fs, and came close to club records in her events!

Note that the Club Records (on the web page: http://lynnmarshall.tripod.ca) have been updated with the October 20th meet results, and will be updated again once the November 17th results are official.

The only other meet in town this year (2001) is a distance meet (800/1500fs only) at Ottawa U on December 8th.  There is some interest in going to a meet in the Montreal area in early 2002.  Let Lynn know if you are interested in either of these.

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  When the Warm Up says something like: 200fs, 200 ch k, 200 fs p, ..., how often am I supposed to stop and for how long?  Getting Warm

Dear G. Warm: Generally, the warm up is done continuously.  Of course, you can take a short break when needed, or to change equipment (pick up a kick board, swap the kick board for a pull buoy, etc.).  Sometimes, usually near the end of a warm up, a coach will have a short warm up set, usually written something like: 3 x 100 fs build.  If the amount of rest to take is not specified 10-15sec is about right.

Dear Coach: When you tell me to descend, does that mean get faster or get slower?  Need A Specification

Dear N. A. Specification: In swimming terminology we use "descend" to indicate the time (not the effort), and thus "descend" means get faster (and "ascend" means get slower).  Occasionally a coach will indicate the effort levels, sometimes indicating "increasing" or "decreasing" effort, but usually as a percentage of your maximum effort (e.g. 85% effort).  When you are descending or ascending the coach will usually indicate how much (e.g. 5 seconds) to descend or ascend by.

Early Birds and Night Caps Notes

On November 1st, coach Lynn challenged the Nightcaps Back-to-Basics group to a race.  The team of
Natalie G, Judy, Terry, Paul G, Paul K, Britt, Darren, Simon completed their 8x25fs in 2:38, soundly beating Lynn's 2:45 200IM!  Next time, either Lynn gets to do fs, or the team swims a Medley relay.  Great job guys -- I thought I'd be able to keep up!

Would you like to do a time trial in a particular event near the end of the Fall Term?  Let me know and I'll work out a schedule!
