Carleton Masters Newsletter #28                        Saturday, January 5th, 2001

To: Carleton Coaches

Bcc: Early Birds (46 addresses); Whitecaps (64 addresses), Nightcaps (36 addresses)

Welcome or Welcome Back to all Masters!!

Winter Session: The Winter session is underway!  Cost for this session (which runs until April 18/19th) is $133.75 (including GST) for Earlybirds and Whitecaps, and $90.95 for Nightcaps.  Coaches will be the same as in the Fall: Earlybirds: Lynn; Whitecaps: Kristi and Mits; Nightcaps: Lynn; Saturdays: Rotating schedule (posted on website).  There is still space in all groups.  Sign up in the Athletics Office (8:30am-4:30pm M-F 520-4480).

Safety Supervision (for children) is available in the winter session for the same workouts as in the Fall (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday 6-7:10pm and Saturday 9-10am) at a cost of $73.75.  Maximum number of children is 9.  Sign up in the Athletics Office.

Interested in Competing?: Those interested in competing need to register with MSO (Masters Swimming Ontario).  Cost is $25 ($20 goes to MSO, and $5 to Carleton Masters).  As some people want to compete in the January 19th meet, I need your MSO registration information by Thursday, January 10th -- sign up on the bulletin board on the pool deck, and give cash or a cheque payable to "Carleton Masters Swim Club" to Lynn or your coach.  (Please sign up as part of this group registration if you are interested in competing, as it's extra work to sign people up one at a time!)

Interested in Weight Training?: A Swimmers' Strength Training Clinic will be held Saturdays January 12th, 19th and February 2nd from 11am-1pm in the Fitness Centre.  Cost for the 6-hour clinic is $32.10 for members ($69.55 for non-members).  The course will be taught by a qualified fitness centre instructor.  Sign up in the Athletics Office.

Newsletter: An e-newsletter (like this one) is sent out about every two weeks.  If you have new lane-mates, please mention to them that they should give their e-mail address to their coach if they'd like to receive it.

Births:
Beth Kwavnick (x-Whitecaps) and Jonathon Stein had an early addition to their family.  Adam Benjamin arrived at 6:18 am on December 20th weighing in at 5lbs 11oz.  Mom and baby doing well.  (The bris took place December 27).
Anhthu (Whitecaps) and Alain Lauzon are pleased to announce the arrival of Adeane on December 22nd.  She weighed in at 6lbs 4oz and was at the pool with Mom and big sister Anhya on Saturday, January 5th!
Birthday Card for Catherine Bridges: Charles S (Whitecaps) has suggested that all sign a birthday card for Catherine (her birthday is Feb 19th) -- she's the woman who swam with us a few years ago and is currently recovering from a very serious car accident last summer.  I'll bring one in and post it on the bulletin board in early January.

Suggestions for Workouts or Interested in Making up a Workout or a Set?: If you have suggestions for the workouts (something you like that we never do, or something you dislike that we do too much!), or if you'd like to try making up a workout or a set in a workout, just talk to your coach.

Interested in Copies of the Workouts?: If you are interested in getting copies of the Earlybird or Nightcaps Masters workouts ahead of time?  Let me know.  I usually e-mail out the week’s workouts on Sunday.

Social Events: All swimmers are invited to join us for:
Thursday Dinner (after Whitecaps workout): Meet by the Tuck Shop around 7:45pm
Thursday Drink (after Nightcaps workout): Meet by the Tuck Shop around 9:30pm
Saturday Brunch (after 9-10am workout): Meet by the Tuck Shop around 10:30am

Triathletes: Check out Rudy Hollywood’s (Earlybirds/Whitecaps) website: http://www.trirudy.com and subscribe to the daily tri-news e-mail.

Toonie Notes:
Special mention to Debby W (Whitecaps) for attending toonie workouts on four consecutive days: December 27th-30th!  And congratulations to Dawn C (Whitecaps) and Debby W, as well as Gord M (Brockville) for ending the year on a high note with a two hour workout on Sunday, December 30th!!

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  What are the advantages and disadvantages of swimming with flippers?  Wondering about Fins

Dear W.a.Fins:  Flippers are a great tool for improving ankle flexibility.  If you are one of those people who go next to nowhere doing flutter kick with a board, flippers can help improve your ankle flexibility (you'll still need to do lots of stretching!).  Flippers are also a good tool when doing (slow) drills.  They allow you to concentrate on the drill without worrying about sinking!  They are also good for giving a feeling of speed -- as you go faster your body position in the water will change (for the better! -- much higher in the water), so flippers can give beginners a chance to "feel" what it's like to swim really fast, and thus know what they're aiming for.  That said, I wouldn't recommend wearing flippers too much as you can become dependent on them, and they can give you blisters and eventually hurt your ankles/Achilles tendons.

Early Birds and Night Caps Notes

I hope that everyone had a good holiday!  We'll be starting with a stroke technique focus and then begin increasing the intensity towards the middle of the term.  There will be an opportunity for some time trials (long distance as well as short distance) towards the end of the term.  Suggestions (and complaints!) are always welcome!

As usual, I will be keeping track of attendance.  Bernie (Earlybirds) had us all worried on Wednesday as it looked like his perfect attendance record had come to an end, but he showed up eventually!

If you have any special goals that I should know about (triathlons, etc.), be sure and let me know.  Setting swimming goals is always a good idea -- anything from swim 25m butterfly, to swim 500m continuously, or swim 1750m during a 1hr workout, or average 3 swims per week, etc.

And just to include some swimming statistics... every year I calculate my annual swimming distance total.  For 2001, I averaged 5006m/day.  That's 1,827,200m or 1,827km in 2001.  I've been keeping track for 20 years now, and my 20 year average is 4612m/day.  That's 33,693,600m or 33,694km since 1982!
