Important Notes

There *is* a workout Saturday, February 16th!
It was originally announced that there would be no workout on Saturday, February 16th due to a waterpolo tournament.  However, the tournament will not need the pool early Saturday morning, so there will be workouts both 8-9am and 9-10am Saturday, February 16th.  Swimmers from all Masters groups can attend one of these two workouts at no additional charge.  (Thanks to Steve Baird, Aquatics Coordinator for arranging this!)

Possible New Masters Groups:
We are planning some additions to the current Masters groups.

First, we are considering starting a new Masters Group.  This group would be Very Earlybirds and would be a (very) early morning group.  Possible times being considered are 6:00-7:30am Monday and Wednesday (plus the usual Saturday times) or 6:30-7:30am Monday, Wednesday, and Friday (plus the usual Saturday times).  If there is enough interest, this group would start in March and run for March and April.  If successful, it would continue for May and June, and if numbers warrant, also for July and August.  If this program goes ahead, those currently registered in Earlybirds or Whitecaps could switch to the new group in March at no additional charge (those in Nightcaps could also transfer, but would have to pay a bit extra).  If you are interested in this group for March/April, May/June and/or July/August, please let me know ASAP, specifying which of the two alternatives you would sign up for (one or the other or both), and which you would prefer.

Secondly, there has a request to continue the Nightcaps group in the Spring/Summer terms.  While there is no evening pool time available in July/August due to the large number of special summer programs, there is tentatively some pool time available in May/June.  This pool time would be earlier than normal and the days would be slightly different, i.e. 7:15-8:00pm Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday (plus the usual Saturday times).  If you would sign up for this program, please let me know ASAP.  This May/June session will be added if there is sufficient interest.

Christmas Party Photos: Some photos from the Christmas party have been posted on the bulletin board.  Thanks to George and Joanie (both Whitecaps) for bringing in their photos.

Birthday Card for Catherine Bridges: Charles S (Whitecaps) has suggested that all sign a birthday card for Catherine (her birthday is Feb 19th) -- she's the woman who swam with us a few years ago and is currently recovering from a very serious car accident last summer.  A card is now posted on the bulletin board -- please sign it (even if you don't know Catherine).

Race Reports and Swim Meets (as usual, please let me know if I've missed anyone or any races!):

Ten members of Carleton University Masters Whitecaps (CAPS) [that's us!] will be competing at the Technosport meet at the University of Ottawa meet on Saturday, January 19th -- results next time!

The next local meet coming up is the Nepean Masters Winterlude Meet (50m pool) to be held at the Nepean Sportsplex. There is already a lot of interest in this meet:

Date/Time: Saturday, February 9th; Warm Up: 12:45pm, Meet runs: 1:30pm-approx 7pm, followed by social
Events: 100bk, 100fl, 50br, 50fs, 200Open (fl, bk, br or fs), 4x50 mixed medley relay, 200IM, 100br, 100fs, 50bk, 50fl, 400fs, 4x50 mixed fs relay
Cost: $3 club cost (to cover relays) plus $5 per individual event (up to 4 events)

For Sale

Josee (Earlybirds/Whitecaps) bought a size girl's size 8 TYR navy blue lycra bathing suit for her niece for Christmas and then found out her brother had already got her one!  The suit is brand new (still has the tags on).  It cost $37.99+tax and Josee would like to sell it for $30.  A girl's size 8 is about a size 26 women's.
For more information, contact Josee Levesque (levesque@ccrs.nrcan.gc.ca)

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  This might be a silly question, but how do I stop my latex cap from sticking together between workouts?   New Masters Member

Dear N. M. Member:  Welcome to Masters!  There is no such thing as a silly question!  The best way to take care of your cap and have it last longer is to dry it off after swimming and put a small amount of talcum (baby) powder both inside and out.  That should solve the sticking problem.

Dear Coach:  How many lengths of each stroke are there in a 300IM?  Not Quite Awake (at 7:30am)

Dear N.Q. Awake:  In a 25m pool (all our workouts are held in a 25m pool), the first number in IM distance (here "3") is the number of lengths of each stroke.  Thus in a 100IM, there is 1 length of each stroke, a 200IM has 2, and a 300IM has 3 lengths of each stroke (etc.!).

p.s. Remember that IM = Individual Medley and the order of the strokes is fly, back, breast and free.  (Except in a Medley Relay where it is back, breast, fly and free!)

Earlybirds and Nightcaps Notes

As we go through the strokes (freestyle and breaststroke down, backstroke and butterfly to go), let me know if there's anything you'd like us to cover or revisit after we finish the first pass on drills!  So far, the list is freestyle flip turns and freestyle breathing.  Suggestions and comments are always welcome.

I will be coaching the Carleton Varsity team at the OUA (Ontario University Athletics) Championships in Sudbury (at Laurentian University) on February 1st-3rd, and we'll be leaving on January 31st.  Blake has kindly agreed to coach the Nightcaps on Thursday, January 31st and the Earlybirds on Friday, February 1st on my behalf.  He'll take good care of you all!  Thanks, Blake!
