Carleton Masters Newsletter #31                        Saturday, February 23rd, 2002

To: Carleton Coaches

Bcc: Early Birds (57 addresses); Whitecaps (67 addresses), Nightcaps (35 addresses), Varsity registered with Masters (15 addresses), those interested in Very Early Birds (33 addresses)

Upcoming Cancellations:
All Masters groups are cancelled on Good Friday (March 29th) and Easter Monday (April 1st).  We may hold an extra toonie ($2 cost) workout on Monday, April 1st.  If you are interested, please let Lynn know which workout(s) you would attend: 6:30-7:30am, 7:30-8:30am and/or 6:00-7:10pm.

Very Earlybirds Masters Group:
The "Very Earlybirds" program starts this Monday (February 25th) and runs until the pool shutdown (Friday, April 19th).  You can still register in person at the Athletics Office (2nd floor) or by phone at 520-4480 between the hours of 8:30am and 4:30pm Monday to Friday.  Cost (Carleton Athletics Members Only): $60 + $4.20 GST = $64.20.  Those currently registered in another Carleton Masters program who want to switch to this group should contact the office to arrange a transfer.

Summer Masters Groups:
Many of the Masters groups will be running in the summer.  All groups include a Saturday workout.  For May/June it will be 8-9am OR 9-10am.  For July/August it will be 9-10am only.  More details on these groups will be provided once available.

Whitecaps May-August (6:00-7:10pm MTuTh)
Very Earlybirds (if enough interest) May-June or May-August (6:30-7:30am MWF)
Earlybirds I May-June or May-August (7:30-8:30am MWF)
Earlybirds II May-June ONLY (8:30-9:30am MWF)

May/June Earlier Nightcaps:
The usual Nightcaps time is not available May-August.  An alternative for May/June that is being considered is 7:15-8:00pm Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday (plus the usual Saturday times).  So far there has been limited interest (8 people).  If you are interested, please let me know ASAP.

Daytime Masters Group:
Several people have asked if there could be a Masters group during the day on weekdays (e.g. lunchtimes).  Public swim has the whole pool from 11:45am-1:15pm, thus it would have to be late morning or early afternoon, which I suspect will be difficult for most people!  However, if you would be interested, let me know and indicate the days/times that would work for you, and I'll investigate pool availability if numbers warrant.

Birthday Card for Catherine Bridges: Thanks to everyone who signed Catherine's card.  Her recovery (from a life threatening car accident in August) continues at an amazing rate!

Fun Swim Meet:
A few people have asked if we could have a fun swim meet sometime (for those who aren't sure if they want to enter a "real" meet!).  If you would be interested, let me know and if there is enough interest we'll arrange something.

Lane Naming Contest:
The Earlybird I (7:30-8:30 group) lane 2 swimmers (led by Kristi, Moe, and Andrew K, along with David M, and sometimes Rudy and Anhthu) do butterfly at every opportunity and plan to do 50m and 100m fly time trials later this term.  They have named themselves "The Frequent Flyers", and have issued a challenge to other lanes to come up with their own names.  The only other lane I know of with its own name, is the Whitecaps lane led by George which has been known as "The Hospitality Lane" for years now!  Discuss with your lanemates and send in your lane names.  We'll have (small!) prizes for the best names.  I've received only a few more lane names: "The Persistent Flying Slugs", "The Fast Lane", and "Not The Hospitality Lane".  Get your suggestions in soon!

Race Reports and Swim Meets (please let me know if I've missed anyone or any races!):

The next local swim meet coming up is the Technosport Invitational (25m pool) to be held at the University of Ottawa.  There is already quite a bit of interest:

Date/Time: Saturday, March 16th; Warm Up: 8:30am, Meet runs: 9:00-11:30am followed by free breakfast
Events: 200fs, 50bk, 100fly, 50br, 50fl, 100br, 100fs, 200IM, 100bk, 50fs, 4x50 women/men medley relay
Cost: $30 (unlimited number of events)
Deadline: E-mail me or sign up on the bulletin board by Tuesday, March 5th and pay at the meet (cash or cheque payable to "Technosport")

For those interested in competing at the Ontario Provincial Championships (Etobicoke Olympium, April 5-7th), the details have been posted on the bulletin board at the pool.  Please submit your entry form to Lynn by Monday, March 11th, along with a cheque payable to "OSOA/OMSC".  If you have any questions, just ask!

Finally, here is information on an upcoming triathlon that may be of interest to some: The University of Western Ontario (London) Triathlon Club is hosting the University Multisport Championships on March 23rd. It will be a Sprint distance triathlon (indoor pool swim, outdoor bike and run). The race is open to all athletes - not just students. Cost is only $35 (includes Race Kit, award ceremony, food & beverages and post-race dinner) plus each participant is asked to donate a non-perishable food item to the UWO Food Bank. The first heat will be at 9:00am with heats running every 30 minutes until 4:00pm. For further info, please email race director Cory Poulton at cwpoulto@uwo.ca.

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  I did the flip turn clinic with the Earlybirds and am trying to incorporate flip turns during workout.  Where on the wall should I be turning to minimize danger of collisions?  Flipper

Dear Flipper:  I recommend moving over to the far side of the lane (as soon as the person in front of you has gone by) before you start your flip turn so that you can push straight off the wall, without danger of hitting the person behind you.  It's also easier on your back as you don't have to push off at an angle, and is more efficient.

Dear Coach: I am interested in doing more triathlons this summer and I am wondering if you have any suggestions with regards to my swimming training (or any training for that matter) between now and the spring?  I am currently doing '2 of each' a week (2 workout's of at least one hour each for the running, swimming and cycling).  I am also doing 3 weight training workouts during the week.  In the next couple of weeks I want to slowly increase to 3 of each a week.  Am I on the right track?  Novice Triathlete

Dear N.Triathlete: First, if you're not already a subscriber to www.trirudy.com, I suggest that you sign up.  There are often tips for beginner triathletes with regards to training, as well as people looking for others/groups to cycle/run with.

It sounds like you already have a pretty good plan in mind, so I'll just include a few general suggestions.

You may find that as you increase your cardio workouts (swim/bike/run) that you need to cut back a bit on your weights (to twice a week, or stick with lighter weights), as heavy weights can drain your energy for a couple of days.  Stop weights completely the week of a competition (maybe two weeks or so before a "big" race).

Ensure that your training increases gradually -- no more than 10% per week is a good guideline.  Also, ensure that you train in cycles, so that you have an easy week every 4-7 weeks.  As your training progresses, you probably want to add workouts where you do two activities in a row (e.g. swim and then bike, or bike and then run), so that your body gets used to the transition.  While long slower training is appropriate ensure that you also do some interval training in all the sports (just like in swimming, interval training will help increase your speed).

As you get to a more elite level, you may want to focus more training on your weakest sport, and reduce that in your strongest sport (e.g. a strong swimmer will get much more benefit from improving his/her cycling and running, as there is more room for improvement!).

Top age group and elite triathletes will also spend time practicing their transitions (leaving shoes clipped to the bike pedals, putting helmet off and on, changing shoes, etc.).   There are also lots of time saving "devices" you can get: a wetsuit, special bike wheels, lighter bike parts, drink systems with a straw, a belt to attach your race number to, elastic shoe laces or special shoe lace clips, etc.  I'll leave recommendations in this area to the experts on "TriRudy"!
