Carleton Masters = Newsletter #32           &nbs= p;            Sunday, March 10th, 2002 =

To: Carleton Coaches

Bcc: Early Birds (51 addresses); = Whitecaps (67 addresses), Nightcaps (33 addresses), Varsity registered with = Masters (12 addresses), Very Early Birds (26 addresses)

Upcoming = Cancellations:
All Masters groups are = cancelled on Good Friday (March 29th) and Easter Monday (April 1st).  We may hold an extra toonie ($2 cost) workout on Monday, = April 1st.  If you are interested, please let Lynn know which workout(s) = you would attend: 6:30-7:30am, 7:30-8:30am and/or 6:00-7:10pm.  (So far = there has not been much response!)

Very Earlybirds Masters = Group:
The "Very Earlybirds" program started = on Monday, February 25th and runs until the pool shutdown (Friday, April = 19th).  The turn out for these workouts has been great so far (17-25 swimmers), and = it is likely that this group will continue over the spring/summer.  There is still some space in this group = for March/April (register at 520-4480 8:30am-4:30pm M-F).

Summer Masters Groups:
Many of the Masters groups will be running in the summer.  All = groups include a Saturday workout.  For May/June it will be 8-9am OR = 9-10am.  For July/August it will be 9-10am only.  More = details on these groups will be provided once available, as well as information on = when registration starts.

Whitecaps May-August (6:00-7:10pm MTuTh)
Very Earlybirds (if enough interest) May-June or May-August (6:30-7:30am MWF)
Earlybirds I May-June or May-August (7:30-8:30am MWF)
Earlybirds II May-June ONLY (8:30-9:30am = MWF)

May/June Earlier = Nightcaps:
The usual Nightcaps time is not available May-August.  An alternative for May/June that is being considered = is 7:15-8:00pm Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday (plus the usual Saturday = times).  So far there has been limited interest (9 people).  If you = are interested, please let me know ASAP.

Birth Announcement: = Andrea C and Derek B (both Whitecaps) are pleased to = announce the arrival of Frederick Herman Chandler-Baas at 10:58am March = 7th.  He weighed in at 8 lb 4 oz (3750 grams) and the whole family is doing well.
Other Club News: = Josee L (Whitecaps/Earlybirds) left Ottawa on March 2nd to start a = new job in Quebec City.  She promises to come back and visit regularly!  Dawn C (Whitecaps) had an operation on her feet on = March 7th and will be out of the pool for at least six weeks.  She'll let us = know once she's up to having visitors.

Catherine Bridges Update: = Catherine's recovery (from a life threatening car accident in August) continues -- = on March 7th she had an operation to remove the external leg fixator removed, and = will soon be moving home permanently (from St Vincent Hospital)!

Fun Swim Meet:
A few people have asked if we could have a fun swim = meet sometime (for those who aren't sure if they want to enter a "real" = meet!).  If you would be interested, let me know and if there is enough interest = we'll arrange something (probably on a weekend).  So far just a few = people have expressed interest.

Club Social Event:
Lisa H (Whitecaps) is a member of the Savoy = Society.  They are presenting "The Gondoliers" by Gilbert & Sullivan at = Centrepointe Theatre April 12-14th and 17-20th (8pm except, Sunday is 2pm).  = Adult tickets $22; student/youth $12.  She suggests that the Saturday, = April 13th, 8pm show would be a good choice for a swim team outing.  = Contact Lisa (lhans@rohcg.on.ca) for more details.

Lane Naming Contest:
So far the list of lane names is: The Frequent Flyers, The = Hospitality Lane, The Persistent Flying Slugs, The Fast Lane, Not The Hospitality = Lane, Bernie's Barracudas, The "K" Lane, and Reynold's Number (i.e. "Ratio of = inertial to viscous forces acting upon an organism").  Any more??

Daytime Masters Group:
Several people have asked if there could be a Masters group during = the day on weekdays (e.g. lunchtimes).  Public swim has the whole pool from = 11:45am-1:15pm, thus it would have to be late morning or early = afternoon, which I suspect will be difficult for most people!  However, if you would = be interested, let me know and indicate the days/times that would work for = you, and I'll investigate pool availability if numbers warrant.

Race Reports and Swim Meets (please let me know if = I've missed anyone or any races!):

Other upcoming meets (anyone registered with MSO [Masters Swimming = Ontario] is eligible to compete) include the Quebec Masters Provincial Championships to be held in Dollard-des-Ormeaux (Montreal), = April 19th-21st.  The deadline for registering is March 30th and full = details can be found at: www.fnq.qc.ca/cpm.pdf.  = At least one Carleton Master, Lina V (Whitecaps), is going to attend.

Varsity Aquatics:
The Carleton Women's Varsity team finished their season at the = Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Championships at U of Toronto February 16th = and 17th.  They were the only team to beat McMaster, the gold medal = winner, and finished the season in fourth place.

Keegan Harris was the Carleton Varsity Swim Team's only = representative at the Canadian Interuniversity Sports (CIS) Championships held at UBC = February 22nd-24th.  Keegan finished 17th in 50m and 100m breaststroke, and = 15th in 200 breast in a lifetime best time.

Triathlon:
Best wishes to Sheila K (Whitecaps/Very = Earlybirds) who is heading to Canmore, AB for a winter triathlon (mountain bike, ski, run) = to be held on March 16th.

Here is information on an triathlon that may be of = interest to some: The University of Western Ontario (London) Triathlon = Club is hosting the University Multisport Championships on = March 23rd. The first heat will be at 9:00am with heats running = every 30 minutes until 4:00pm. For further info, please email race director Cory = Poulton at cwpoulto@uwo.ca

Lane Etiquette
While it is normally up to the lane leader to = keep track of number of lengths and time, it is a great help to him/her if others = in the lane also keep track so that they can help out if the leader miscounts = or forgets when he/she should be leaving.  If you have any questions = about "pace clock math", just ask your coach!  While it is often easier = to just take a set amount of rest after each repeat, everyone is encouraged to = learn how to use the pace clock.

Ask the = Coach

Dear Coach:  Why do the lanes alternate directions (e.g. if lane 1 goes = counter-clockwise, lane 2 goes clockwise, etc.)?  Puzzled

Dear Puzzled:  The reason for this is = that if you hit hands with a person in the next lane, at least you are both going in = the same direction, so there is less likelihood of an injury.  In the = deep end, the lane nearest the diving well must go counter-clockwise to avoid = running into the corner of the "L", and the other lanes are calculated from = that.  The shallow end lanes go in the same direction as they would if the = pool was set up Long Course.

Dear Coach:  When should I = breath out in freestyle (do I breath out all the time, or just before I breath in again)?  Out of Breath

Dear O. o. Breath:  The more air you have in = your lungs, the more buoyant you are and the better you float, thus you want = to keep air in your lungs as much as possible.  At the same time, when you = turn your head to breath, you want to be breathing in, not out and in, to = maximize the amount of air you breath in while turning your head for as short a = time as possible.  Thus if you are breathing every three strokes, you = want to hold your breath in for about 1.5 strokes and then breath it out slowly = for 1.5 strokes.  If you were breathing every 5 strokes, you would hold your breath in for about 3 strokes, and then out for 2.  Practice this when we do sets with a breathing pattern -- = you should find the breathing pattern much easier to do if you hold = your breath in for all but the last 2 strokes!

Dear Coach:  Can you please write the pace = times on the board larger as they are very difficult to see?  Twenty-twenty

Dear T.-twenty:  Sorry about that -- I will attempt to improve this!  Please let me know before you start your set if you can't = see the pace times.  I'll either write them in a larger font for your lane, = or explain the pattern so you can calculate them yourself -- sometimes it = is a multiple of a certain amount of time per 50m.
