Carleton Masters Newsletter #34                             Wednesday, April 3rd, 2002

To: Carleton Coaches

Bcc: Early Birds (56 addresses); Whitecaps (68 addresses), Nightcaps (34 addresses), Varsity registered with Masters (13 addresses), Very Early Birds (32 addresses)

Masters Head Coach:
After five years as the Carleton University Masters Head Coach, Kristi Dean is stepping down at the end of April.  The Athletics staff, pool staff, coaching staff and swimmers want to say a very big thank you to Kristi for all her work in expanding the program and her patience in ensuring that everything runs smoothly!!  Kristi will continue to coach in the Saturday morning rotation and will swim with the Earlybirds.  I will be taking over the Head Coach position in May, and will be working closely with Kristi during the transition.  As always, your input is most valuable, so please continue to give me your feedback and ideas.

End of Winter Session:
Just a reminder that the Winter Masters Sessions will end on Thursday, April 18th (Whitecaps, Nightcaps) or Friday, April 19th (Earlybirds).  The Carleton Pool will be closed Saturday, April 20th to Sunday, May 5th inclusive for annual maintenance.  There will be no "toonie" workouts during this time, as there will be no water in the pool ;-) !

Easter Monday Evening Toonie Workout:
We apologize for any inconvenience due to the shortening of the 6pm swim on April 1st due to the power failure (unfortunately it was a real outage, and not just an April Fool's joke)!

Where to Swim When Carleton is Closed?:
A few people have asked for recommendations on pools to swim at during the pool shutdown.  Two that I recommend (with cool water temperatures, and lots of adult swims with designated fast/medium/slow lanes) are Ottawa University, and Champagne Pool.  Brewer Pool is the closest to Carleton, but is quite warm and sometimes very busy.  Disclaimer: I am in no way associated with any of these pools, and the above is only my opinion :-) !

It costs $2.34 to swim at Ottawa U.  The schedule up until April 28th is at: http://www.uottawa.ca/sports/english/activities/recreation= /swim_montpetit.html.  The pool hours change on April 29th, so I assume the updated schedule will be posted on the same website nearer that date.

It costs $2.35 to swim at a City of Ottawa pool.  The Brewer and Champagne schedules are at:

Mini Swim Camp:
Tentative dates for a mini swim camp / clinic have been selected: Saturday, June 15th 5-7pm and Sunday, June 16th 8:30-10:30am.  There will be a cost to attend the clinic (to cover the pool rental and coaches).  The cost will be $40 for both days and $25 for one day.  The clinic will also be open to non-Carleton Masters at a higher cost: $60 for both days, $40 for one.  As last year, we will offer clinics covering each stroke, as well as starts and turns, and will keep the ratio of swimmers to coaches at around 10:1.

In addition, our underwater camera is fixed(!), so we will offer optional videotaping.  There will be an additional $10 cost to cover the extra time required for feedback after the swim session.  Those videotaped on Saturday will get their feedback from 7:30-8:30pm, and those on Sunday will get their feedback from 11am-noon.

Please let me know ASAP if you are interested in attending this clinic, which day(s) you will attend, whether you are interested in videotaping and on which day.  If you are interested, but these dates aren't feasible, let me know what works for you.  There is some flexibility with the dates and/or we may do a second session later in the summer.

Fun Swim Meet:
A tentative date for a fun swim meet has been set: Saturday, June 22nd 5-7pm.  There will be a $10 charge to cover the pool rental fees.  I'll set the events based on what people are interested in swimming.  Let me know if you are interested in participating as well as the events you'd like to swim.  I'll finalize the program by mid-May.

New and Nearly New Swim Equipment For Sale:
Several swimmers have recently donated swim suits, caps and goggles to the club.  In addition, I've cleaned out my swim cupboard.  Thus, I have a lot of mostly new latex bathing caps, and one pair of new Swedish-style swimming goggles.  I also have a sizable collection of women's bathing suits (sizes 30-38, lycra and polyester/nylon) which are brand new or used only a few times (mostly due to the size not being quite right for the original purchaser).

By selling these at reasonable prices we have a win-win situation.  Club members can save money, and, in addition, the proceeds will go to the club account, and help offset the cost of things like pool rental for the mini-swim camp and fun swim meet, the annual MSO registration of the club, and relay costs at swim meets.

The caps are priced at $1.  The Swedish goggles (1 pair only) at $4.  The suits $10-$20 at the buyer's discretion.  I'll bring these items to the pool starting Monday, April 8th.

Club News:
Dawn C (Whitecaps) is recovering well from her foot operation on March 7th.  She has one cast off, so she can get around on crutches, but it will be another month before she gets the other one off.  She's happy to entertain visitors (dawncantwell@hotmail.com).
Lisa H (Whitecaps) is a member of the Savoy Society.  They are presenting "The Gondoliers" by Gilbert & Sullivan at Centrepointe Theatre April 12-14th and 17-20th (8pm except, Sunday is 2pm).  Adult tickets $22; student/youth $12.  She suggests that the Saturday, April 13th, 8pm show would be a good choice for a swim team outing.  Contact Lisa (lhans@rohcg.on.ca) for more details.

Warning: Break Ins:
I'm sure the women have all seen the signs in the women's change room about locker break ins, and I assume there are similar signs in the men's.  In addition, there a car was recently broken into in Lot 5 (by the pool).  Thus, secure your valuables in your trunk, leave them at home, or bring them onto the pool deck (only recommended if you swim at a time when there aren't a lot of other non-Masters around).

Swimmer Equipment Recommendations

Tamsin (Whitecaps) just got a new pair of goggles that she really likes, and thought others might be interested:
"My new Speedo goggle, sporting the new 'hypo-allergenic super seal', is called Sprint II Deluxe. I found the soft, squishy seals comfortable and leak-free. This new technology, as the marketing folks call it, is probably particularly good for people like me (deep set eyes, fairly small face) who have great difficulty finding well-fitting goggles. I picked them up at Source for Sports in the Carlingwood Mall."

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  I am able to push off past the flags (i.e. over 5m) on all strokes except backstroke.  What am I doing wrong?  Back Problem

Dear B. Problem:  When you push off the wall in backstroke, you should be submerged with your shoulders and hips in line (horizontally) at approximately the depth of the cross bar of the black cross on the wall.  This is exactly what you do in the other strokes, but in backstroke you are facing up instead of down, and there is sometimes a tendency to feel that your face should remain on the surface of the water.  In fact your head should be submerged to the same depth as in the other strokes.  In backstroke you can do dolphin kick or flutter kick after you push off the wall (dolphin kick works best for most people).

Dear Coach:  Where can I swim when the Carleton pool is closed?  Swim Fanatic

Dear S. Fanatic:  My recommendations are included at the top of the newsletter...

Dear Coach:  When will the decision be made as to whether the earlier Nightcaps (7:10-8pm MTuTh) will go ahead for May and June?  We Want Nightcaps!

Dear W. W. Nightcaps:  On Monday, April 29th (one week before the Spring/Summer groups start), a decision will be made, and everyone will be notified.  If we do not have sufficient interest (12 people required) then those who have signed up will have their money refunded (or can pay the difference to join another group).  Please encourage your team-mates to sign up soon!
