This is the Last Week of Winter Session!:
Just a reminder that the Winter Masters Sessions will end this Thursday, April 18th (Whitecaps, Nightcaps) or Friday, April 19th (Earlybirds).  The Carleton Pool will be closed Saturday, April 20th to Sunday, May 5th inclusive for annual maintenance.  There will be no "toonie" workouts during this time, as there will be no water in the pool ;-) !

End of Session Dinner:
We are getting together this Thursday, April 18th for an end-of-term dinner.  Coach Mits Kachi has made an 8:30pm reservation under his name at Papagus (Greek Food), 281 Kent St.  Please R.S.V.P. to Mits at mitsmas@magma.ca by 10am Thursday, so that the numbers can be finalized.  Swimmers from all groups are welcome (including the Nightcaps who will be a bit late)!

Spring/Summer Masters Groups:
The Masters groups for the summer have been finalized, and start May 6th.  Further details are listed in the Spring/Summer Program Guide and posted on the web page.  Registration is open -- call (520-4480) or visit the Athletics Office 8:30am-4:30pm M-F.  There have been some problems with the phones lately, so if you want to pay by credit card but cannot get through, you can leave a note in the secure mailbox with your name, membership number, program of interest and credit card number.

Saturday Workouts: 8-9am or 9-10am May 11 - June 29; 9-10am only July 6 - August 24
No workouts: May 20 (Victoria Day), May 25 (Triathlon [see below]), July 1 (Canada Day), August 5 (Civic Holiday)

Mini Swim Camp:
So far there has been quite a bit of interest in the swim camp / clinic and no objection to the tentative dates.  Thus we will go ahead with: Saturday, June 15th 5-7pm and Sunday, June 16th 8:30-10:30am.  There will be a cost to attend the clinic (to cover the pool rental and coaches).  The cost will be $40 for both days and $25 for one day.  The clinic will also be open to non-Carleton Masters at a higher cost: $60 for both days, $40 for one.  As last year, we will offer clinics covering each stroke, as well as starts and turns, and will keep the ratio of swimmers to coaches at around 10:1.

In addition, our underwater camera is fixed(!), so we will offer optional videotaping.  There will be an additional $10 cost to cover the extra time required for feedback after the swim session.  Those videotaped on Saturday will get their feedback from 7:30-8:30pm, and those on Sunday will get their feedback from 11am-noon.

If you have not already done so, please let me know ASAP if you are interested in attending this clinic, which day(s) you will attend, whether you are interested in videotaping and on which day.

Fun Swim Meet:
We need 12 people to go ahead with the fun swim meet: Saturday, June 22nd 5-7pm.  So far three people have expressed interest.  There will be a $10 charge to cover the pool rental fees.  I'll set the events based on what people are interested in swimming.  Let me know if you are interested in participating as well as the events you'd like to swim.  I'll finalize the program by mid-May.

New and Nearly New Swim Equipment For Sale:
Several swimmers have recently donated swim suits, caps and goggles to the club.  In addition, I've cleaned out my swim cupboard.  Thus, I have a lot of mostly new latex bathing caps, and one pair of new Swedish-style swimming goggles.  I also have a sizable collection of women's bathing suits (sizes 30-38, lycra and polyester/nylon) which are brand new or used only a few times (mostly due to the size not being quite right for the original purchaser).

By selling these at reasonable prices we have a win-win situation.  Club members can save money, and, in addition, the proceeds will go to the club account, and help offset the cost of things like pool rental for the mini-swim camp and fun swim meet, the annual MSO registration of the club, and relay costs at swim meets.

The caps are priced at $1.  The Swedish goggles (1 pair only) at $4.  The suits $10-$20 at the buyer's discretion.  Ask to look at our "boutique"!

Club News:
A large group of Carleton Masters attended the April 13th showing of "The Gondoliers" to see our own Lisa H (Whitecaps) in action.  It was a great show!  Dawn C (Whitecaps) was at the show (still on crutches) but hopes to be back in the pool when we reopen on May 6th.
Alumni News: I recently had an e-mail from Amy Anderson (x-Whitecaps and now in Toronto).  She reports that she and Ross are expecting their first baby on June 3rd, and she'll send us an update after the big day.  She can be reached at amanderson@deloitte.ca.

Where to Swim When Carleton is Closed?:
A few people have asked for recommendations on pools to swim at during the pool shutdown.  Two that I recommend (with cool water temperatures, and lots of adult swims with designated fast/medium/slow lanes) are Ottawa University, and Champagne Pool.  Brewer Pool is the closest to Carleton, but is quite warm and sometimes very busy.  Disclaimer: I am in no way associated with any of these pools, and the above is only my opinion :-) !

It costs $2.34 to swim at Ottawa U.  The schedule up until April 28th is at: http://www.uottawa.ca/sports/english/activities/recreation= /swim_montpetit.html.  The pool hours change on April 29th, so I assume the updated schedule will be posted on the same website nearer that date.

It costs $2.35 to swim at a City of Ottawa pool.  The Brewer and Champagne schedules are at:

Race Reports and Swim Meets (please let me know if I've missed anyone or any races!):

Three Carleton Whitecaps swam at the Ontario Masters Provincial Championships in Etobicoke, April 5-7th.  The full results can be found at: http://www.geocities.co= m/mastersswimming.
Tom A [High Intensity] placed 3rd in 100IM (1:09.65 club record), fourth in 50fly (30.28 club record), and fifth in 50br (36.56) in the 40-44 age group.
George [Whitecaps] won the 100br (2:19.09), was 2nd in 100bk (2:10.25 club record), 50br (58.16), and 100IM (2:23.56), and 3rd in 50fs (52.32) and 200fs (4:13.51), in the 75-79 age group.

Six Carleton Whitecaps (all female!) participated in the Technosport meet on April 13th at the University of Ottawa.  The official results are not yet available, but I believe that four club records were set:
Margaret (70-74) [Earlybirds]: 100fs (2:34), 100IM (3:02)
Barb M (20-24) [Varsity/Earlybirds]: 50br (:42)
Katie M [Varsity/Earlybirds], Lynn [Coach], Patricia M [Whitecaps], and Barb M (100-119): 4x100free relay (4:55)
Also Mel [Earlybirds] did a great 400 (5:58).
