Feedback Forms / Pool Shutdown / Spring Session:
A big thank you to everyone who completed a feedback form -- we received 86 completed forms!  I'll be including some of the statistics and suggestions in the next few newsletters.

I hope everyone is enjoying the break from swimming at Carleton!  The Spring session starts on Monday, May 6th (the day the pool reopens after the annual maintenance).  Please register for the Spring/Summer sessions ASAP, especially if you want to swim in the earlier Nightcaps session.  As of end of day Thursday, April 25th, seven (of the required 12) have signed up for the earlier Nightcaps session.  We will make a decision early next week on the May/June Nightcaps.

If you are not planning to swim over the summer and would like to be removed from the e-mailing list, just let me know.

End of Session Dinner:
We had a great turn out for the end of term dinner at Papagus.  A big thank you to Coach Mits for organizing it, and for showing up despite an awful cold!  Retiring Head Coach Kristi received thank you cards and a bike computer from the team.  She will be putting the bike speedometer/odometer to good use as she trains for triathlons this summer!  Thanks again, Kristi, for all your work!!

Feedback Forms Information (Part 1):
Here is some information received from the 86 feedback forms received:

Whitecaps Theme Nights:
There was a proposal to rotate the theme nights instead of always doing IM on Monday, choice on Tuesday and free on Thursday.  24 were in favour of the change.  7 were ok with the idea if they could know in advance what each day would be.  2 weren't sure, and 6 were opposed.  Thus, as one swimmer suggested, we'll try it for the summer and vote again in August.  For those who like to plan ahead, the themes will be posted on the bulletin board and on the web page.  The first week will follow the "normal" order (IM Monday, choice Tuesday, and free on Thursday).

About You:
How long attending?:  30%: 1 term to 1 year;  17%: 2-5 years;  16%: 10 years or more;  16%: 1-2 years;  13%: 1 term or less;  8%: 5-10 years.  While 60% have been swimming with Carleton Masters for less than 2 years, 16% (1 in 6) have been swimming at Carleton for at least 10 years!

How many swims per week?:  56%: 3 times;  36%: twice;  7%: 4 times; 1%: once.   Not many make the full 4 workouts per week!

Swimming for?: 76: Fitness;  23: Social;  18: Triathlons;  11: Masters Competitions; plus 1-3 responses each for: Varsity Swim, Varsity Waterpolo, Open Water Swims; and Cross-Training for: Cross-Country Skiing, Cycling, Bike Racing, Mountain Biking, Running, Walking, and Paddling.  What an active bunch!

Are you a?: 81%: Off-Campus Member;  10%: CU Student;  5%: Faculty;  2%: Alumni;  2% Staff/Retired Staff.  Most people buy a membership!

Your age?: 36%: 30-39;  26%: 20-29;  22%: 40-49; 9%: 50-59;  4%: 60+;  3%: <20.  That's a pretty good bell curve!

Your sex?: 57%: female; 43% male.  Eleven people missed this question?!  If they were all men, it would have been 50-50!

Workouts Attended: Including both regularly and sometimes:  35: 6pm Thursday;  33: 6pm Monday;  32: 6pm Tuesday;  26: 7:30am Wednesday; 25: 7:30am Monday;  25: 8am Saturday;  24: 7:30am Friday;  20: 9am Saturday.  Very Earlybirds, Nightcaps and 8:30am Earlybird responses ranged from 10-13, except 8:30am Wednesday had only 7.  The numbers look reasonable, except that I think some Very Earlybirds must have forgotten to hand in their feedback forms :-) !

More to come in the next few newsletters, including your comments on the workouts, coaches, and facility.

Mini Swim Camp:
The mini swim camp will be held: Saturday, June 15th 5-7pm and Sunday, June 16th 8:30-10:30am.  The cost will be $40 for both days and $25 for one day, plus $10 for the (optional) videotaping.  The clinic will also be open to non-Carleton Masters at a higher cost: $60 for both days, $40 for one day, and $15 for videotaping.  As last year, we will offer clinics covering each stroke, as well as starts and turns, and will keep the ratio of swimmers to coaches at around 10:1.  Coaches confirmed to date are: John, Tim, Louise and Lynn.

Those videotaped on Saturday will get their feedback from 7:30-8:30pm, and those on Sunday will get their feedback from 11am-noon.  The videotaping will cover two strokes and you will be taped both above and underwater.

If you have not already done so, please let me know if you are interested in attending this clinic, which day(s) you will attend, whether you are interested in videotaping and on which day.

Fun Swim Meet:
We need 12 people to go ahead with the fun swim meet: Saturday, June 22nd 5-7pm.  So far only three people have expressed interest.  There will be a $10 charge to cover the pool rental fees.  I'll set the events based on what people are interested in swimming.  Let me know if you are interested in participating as well as the events you'd like to swim.  I'll finalize the program by mid-May.

New and Nearly New Swim Equipment For Sale:
There are still caps, a (different) pair of goggles, and some women's suits available for sale.  The caps are priced at $1.  The goggles $4, and the suits $10-$20 at the buyer's discretion.  Ask to look at our "boutique"!

Club News:
Margaret (Earlybirds) dropped by the pool on the last day to show us her new tattoo!  If you didn't get a chance to see it yet, do check it out!

Where to Swim When Carleton is Closed?:
A few people have asked for recommendations on pools to swim at during the pool shutdown.  Two that I recommend (with cool water temperatures, and lots of adult swims with designated fast/medium/slow lanes) are Ottawa University, and Champagne Pool.  Brewer Pool is the closest to Carleton, but is quite warm and sometimes very busy.  Disclaimer: I am in no way associated with any of these pools, and the above is only my opinion :-) !

It costs $2.34 to swim at Ottawa U.  The schedule up until April 28th is at: http://www.uottawa.ca/sports/english/activities/recreation= /swim_montpetit.html.
The pool hours change on April 29th, and as they don't yet seem to be posted, here's a quick summary:
M-F 7:30-8:30am, M-F 11:30am-1:30pm, M-F 4-5:30pm, M/W/F 6:30-9pm, Tu/Th 7:30-9pm, Sat/Sun 2-4:30pm

It costs $2.35 to swim at a City of Ottawa pool.  The Brewer and Champagne schedules are at:

Race Reports and Swim Meets (please let me know if I've missed anyone or any races!):

Quebec Provincials:
Three members of Carleton Whitecaps swam at the Quebec Provincial Championships April 19-21st.    Each was swimming for a different club!  Lina V (Whitecaps) was swimming for Carleton.  Caroline S (Nightcaps) was swimming for St. Laurent, and Jim W (Whitecaps) was swimming for Etobicoke.  It was a big meet with 670 swimmers participating, and was held in Montreal.

Lina (swimming in her new 50-54 age group), got 4 firsts (50fs, 100fs, 50fly, and 100IM) -- her 50fs time (33.91) and 50fly time (37.88) were especially impressive, and were both under the Quebec records (but she is not eligible for these, as she's from Ontario)!  She also placed 2nd in 100 and 200br, and 4th in 50br.  While she was a bit disappointed in her breaststroke times, this is a great start to her new age group!

Jim, also new in the 50-54 age group, placed first in his 7 events: 1500fs; 50, 100 & 200br; 200bk; 200 & 400IM.  His 200br (2:59.65) was under the Quebec record.

Caroline, in the very competitive 25-29 age group, placed 6th in 50bk, 8th in 50 & 200br, 10th in 100br, and 18th in 50fs.

World Masters Championships (NZ) and Ontario Provincials:
Jim also recently competed in the World Masters Championships (end of March, Christchurch, NZ), swimming for TOMS (The Ontario Masters Swimmers), and also in the Ontario Provincials (early April, Etobicoke), swimming for Etobicoke.

At Worlds, Jim placed 4th in the 3k open water swim, 8th in 200bk, 10th in 400IM, 11th in 200IM, 13th in 800fs and 15th in 200br.  At Worlds the top 10 get medals, so Jim had quite a haul!

At Provincials, Jim placed 1st in 800 and 1500fs, 2nd in 200bk, 3rd in 200br, and 5th in 200 & 400IM.  As Jim swam the 800 and 1500 one after the other, he is to be commended for these performances!!

Kingston 1/2 Marathon (April 21st):
Rudy H (Earlybirds/Whitecaps) competed in the Kingston Half Marathon, finishing 65th overall, 55th male, and 6th in the Men's 50-59 age group -- good job Rudy.  (Oh, yeah, he also cycled to the race from Sharbot Lake -- crazy or what?!?)

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  There is a formula you can apply to a runner's time for any distance that will predict his/her time on a greater distance.  It takes into account fatigue, etc.  Is there something similar for swimming?   How Fast Should I Be?!

Dear H.F. Should-I-Be:  I don't know of an exact formula, but I'd suggest using the International Point Score (IPS) charts as a starting point: http://www.swimnews.com/IPS.do.  They give a number of points to any swim.  You can then figure out the corresponding time for a different distance/stroke that's worth the same number of points.  That should get you started!

Very Earlybirds, Earlybirds and Nightcaps Notes

Attendance:
130 swimmers attended at least one Very Earlybird or Earlybird workout in the Winter term.  The minimum number at the Very Earlybirds (6:30am) was 13 and the maximum was 25, with a mean of 18.1.  The 7:30am group ranged between 12 and 30 with a mean of 21.5.  The 8:30am group ranged from 6 to 18 with a mean of 10.8.  The total number of swimmers each morning ranged from 28 to 56 with a mean of 41.3.

64 swimmers attended at least one Nightcaps workout in the Winter term.  The minimum number of swimmers was 7, and the maximum was 24, with a mean of 12.0.

Those deserving recognition for perfect attendance this term are Alan (8:30am Earlybirds) and Andrew K (6:30am Very Earlybirds).  Special mention goes to Bernie (7:30am Earlybirds) for coming within 10 days of a perfect year's attendance and finishing the year (May 2001-April 2002) missing just one workout!

Time Trial and Relay Summary:
The information below on most improved and fastest swimmers is taken from the Time Trials done in the Earlybird and Nightcaps sessions between March 26th and April 19th, and includes the 800/1500 time trials from March 26/27th, as well as the relay splits from April 18/19th.  (Normally, only the first swimmer on a relay gets an official split, but as we didn't use blocks for Earlybirds and the Nightcaps couldn't dive in, I took all of them into consideration.)  Times done in competitions were not eligible.

There were some very big improvements, with five swimmers improving by over 5sec/100m!!  The 3 most improved female swimmers were Joelle (Nightcaps), Isla (Earlybirds) and Kathy B (Nightcaps).  Joelle took 3.8 seconds of her 50fs.  Isla took 3.6 seconds off her 50br, and Kathy took 3.3 seconds off her 50fly!  Mark Hynes and Tony P (both Nightcaps) were the top men.  Mark and Tony both improved most in their 100fs taking off 6.3 and 5.6 seconds, respectively!

The International Point Scores (link to web page below) are used to determine the best swims.  For the fastest female, Barb M and Lila (both Varsity Swim/Earlybirds) were very close.  Barb's 50fs edged Lila's 1500fs by 1 point (563 to 562).  Sheila K (Very Earlybirds/Whitecaps) was the top non-Varsity female with 451 points for her 400fs.  Alicia (Waterpolo/Earlybirds 2) was next with 438 points for her 50fs.  Second non-Varsity female was Tamara (Very Earlybirds), who is new to Carleton Masters this term, with 430 points for 50br; followed closely by Mel (Earlybirds 1) for third with 428 points for her 50fs.

For the men, Corey (Waterpolo/Earlybirds 1) was top with 602 points for his 50fs, followed by Tom A (High Intensity/Earlybirds) with 587 points for 50fly.  Serge (Earlybirds/Whitecaps/Nightcaps) was the top Master with 550 points for his 50fly.  Royce (Varsity Swim/Earlybirds) was next with 497 points for 50fs, followed closely by sprinter John Waring (Varsity Coach/Nightcaps) with 480 points in (of all things!) 1500 fs.  David Barclay (Earlybirds 1) was 2nd Master with 464 points in his 50fs, followed by John Westdal (Very Earlybirds) who was 3rd with 453 points for his 1500fs.

The relays on the last day went very well with some close races, and ties for the Earlybird 2s!  The results of all the relays are below.  Top honours in the free relay went to Earlybird 1 Team #2: David Bickle, Chris K, Bernie and David Barclay in 2:21.3.  The fastest team in the medley relay was Very Earlybird Team #3: Jim Y, Andy J, Kristi, and Dave Bourdon in 2:42.3.

Great job everyone!!

Reminders

Newsletter: An e-newsletter (like this one) is sent out about every two weeks.  If you have new lane-mates, please mention to them that they should give their e-mail address to their coach if they'd like to receive it.

Suggestions for Workouts or Interested in Making up a Workout or a Set?: If you have suggestions for the workouts (something you like that we never do, or something you dislike that we do too much!), or if you'd like to try making up a workout or a set in a workout, just talk to your coach.

Interested in Copies of the Workouts?: If you are interested in getting copies of the Earlybird or Nightcaps Masters workouts ahead of time?  Let me know.  I usually e-mail out the week’s workouts on Sunday.

Social Events: All swimmers are invited to join us for:
Thursday Dinner (after Whitecaps workout): Meet by the Tuck Shop around 7:45pm
Thursday Drink (after Nightcaps workout): Meet by the Tuck Shop around 9:30pm
Saturday Brunch (after 9-10am workout): Meet by the Tuck Shop around 10:30am

Triathletes: Check out Rudy Hollywood’s (Earlybirds/Whitecaps) website: http://www.trirudy.com and subscribe to the daily tri-news e-mail.

Weight Training for Swimmers: A six-hour program on strength training for swimmers was offered 11am-1pm Saturdays January 12th, 19th and February 2nd.  This course was poorly attended (4 people) and the Athletics department is reluctant to offer it again, unless attendance is up.  If you would be interested in this course either now, in the Spring/Summer or next Fall, please let me know .  Also, let me know what time/day works best for you.

General Information: Program information, old newsletters and the Carleton Masters records can be viewed at: http://lynnmarshall.tripod.ca/

See you at the pool!
