Nightcaps Night Out:  Brett suggests that all the Nightcaps head out to the Arrow and Loon after workout on Thursday, June 27th to celebrate the end of the Spring session.  Meet by the Tuck Shop around 8:20pm!

Canada Day Cancellation: There will be no Masters workouts on Monday, July 1st.  (There are workouts on Saturday, June 29th: 8-9am and 9-10am.)  The Summer Session starts on Tuesday, July 2nd (Whitecaps) / Wednesday, July 3rd (6:30am and 7:30am Earlybirds).

The Waring's Pre-Canada Day Party: Sunday, June 30th:
John Waring (Whitecaps/Nightcaps/Coach) and his wife Caroline are hosting a Canada Day party on Sunday, June 30th, 4pm to late at their home at 608 Tourelle, Orleans.  All are welcome!  BYOB, and something to BBQ.  (If you suffer from allergies, note that John and Caroline have three cats.)

Mini Swim Camp:
The mini swim camp held last weekend went well.  We had 27 swimmers attend on Saturday and 19 on Sunday.  So far the feedback on the clinic and underwater video-taping has been favourable.  We were aiming to break even and it worked out well, leaving a $50 profit for the Masters Club.  Thanks to everyone who participated, and a very big thank you to the coaches: John Waring, Louise Hayes, Tim Kilby, and Claudia Cronin-Schlote, as well as to the videographer: Ross Cowie, and assistants: Tom Anzai and Sarah D (lifeguard).

New and Nearly New Swim Equipment For Sale:
There are still caps, a pair of goggles, and some women's suits available for sale.  The caps are priced at $1.  The goggles $4, and the suits $10-$20 at the buyer's discretion.  Ask to look at our "boutique"!

Session Notes

Full attendance statistics will be reported for the Spring session in the next newsletter.  Here are most of the current statistics.  After 7 weeks (18 weekday workouts which excludes the ones Lynn missed), here are the attendance leaders for the Spring session.  There are now 8 swimmers with perfect weekday attendance, and 7 who have missed just one workout.  (Please let me know if I've missed anyone.)  Our best wishes for a speedy recovery to Gosia, who had a perfect attendance record until she broke her arm playing volleyball on Thursday!!  The range in attendance and average number of swimmers at each workout is also shown next to each group:

6:30am Earlybirds (13-25, average 18.3):
Perfect: Dave Bourdon, Jen G
Missed 2: Andrew K

7:30am Earlybirds (13-30, average 18.1):
Perfect: Bernie
Missed 1: Gosia, Jeff, Julie

8:30am Earlybirds (8-16, average 11.6):
Perfect: Penny, Renee
Missed 1: Alan, Jo-Ann, Margaret

Whitecaps ("A": 12-24, average 17.8; "B" to be reported next time):
Perfect: Cam, Debby O, Joanne D
Missed 1: Joanie

Nightcaps (5-13, average 9.6):
Missed 2: Lisa G, Joe P

The time trials have started.  Most people have completed either and 800 or 1500 with some great improvements from last time.  The "crazy" awards go to Joe P (Nightcaps) for doing two timed 1500s, and to John Waring who did two in one workout, followed by a third (his fastest) a few days later!  Congratulations to Patricia (Whitecaps) who swam an even faster 1500 than she did in her recent meet!

The shorter event time trials are underway.  Congratulations to Penny who (finally) broke 1:00 in her 50 fly!!  You have until Tuesday/Wednesday to get your coach to time you in any event(s) (preferably a recognized Masters distance/stroke).  Thursday/Friday will be a "fun" day with some relays at the end.

Note that there is a Masters Invitational Open Postal Event being held as part of a big aquatic event (LatyCar 2002) in Cuba.  The postal events are 1500m, 1hr swim, and 1hr team swim.  (There are no pool swimming events, although there are open water races.)  It costs US$5 to enter each postal event, and you just mail in your times/distances by mid-July.  If anyone is interested just let me know.  Full details are at: http://www.lat= ycar.org/LatyCar02/english/2002.htm, and the postal event information is at: http://= www.latycar.org/LatyCar02/common/Postals_ONLY.pdf

Masters Etiquette
When you are stopped at the end, move to a corner of the lane (right next to the lane rope) to allow others in your lane to touch the wall and/or turn.  Ideally when you turn, you should cross to the far side of the lane before starting your turn, so that when you push off, you will not impede the swimmer behind you.

Race Reports and Swim Meets (please let me know if I've missed anyone or any races!)

Open Water Races:
There are two open water races (open to all) being held by Technosport in Meech Lake this summer -- a 3km race on July 13th and a 4km race on August 17th.  If you are interested in doing the 3km Meech Lake swim on July 13th (from Blanchet beach, 4 times around the island and back), please let me know by Wednesday, July 3rd.  This event is open to all Masters swimmers and triathletes (you do not have to be registered with MSO).  Cost is $30 which includes breakfast in Chelsea after the swim.

I also have the official entry forms for the MSO Ontario Open Water 5km Championships to be held in St. Marys Quarry (near Stratford) on Sunday, September 8th (the Sunday after Labour Day).  It's a fun swim (11 triangles) and a group from Toronto usually organizes an outing to Stratford on Saturday, plus a stay in a B&B near the quarry on Saturday night, as well as a mandatory stop at an ice cream parlour after the post-race feast!!  To participate in this race you must be a member of MSO.  Ask for details...

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  The overall thing I took away from the clinic is that you have to pick and choose from technique to find what works for you. There seem to be few hard and fast rules in swimming; it is largely about feel for the water and every swimmer is different.  Enjoyed the Clinic

Dear E. t. Clinic:  Glad to hear that you found the clinic to be helpful!  I'd say that there actually are quite a few hard and fast rules in swimming, but there are often several ways to achieve each of them.

Dear Coach: I signed up for the Spring session and would like to swim in July and August.  Is there room?  Which groups are available?  Keen to Continue

Dear K. t. Continue:  It's great to hear that you want to continue.  There is room in all groups for July/August.  Check the list at the top of the newsletter for the groups that are running in July/August.

Thursday Dinner (after Whitecaps workout): Meet by the Tuck Shop around 7:45pm

Weight Training for Swimmers: A six-hour program on strength training for swimmers was offered 11am-1pm Saturdays January 12th, 19th and February 2nd.  This course was poorly attended (4 people) and the Athletics department is reluctant to offer it again, unless attendance is up.  If you would be interested in this course next Fall, please let me know.  Also, let me know what time/day works best for you.
