Club News
Anna and Anders (both 7:30am Earlybirds) send in this report:
"We are pleased to announce the arrival of our baby boy! We have now officially joined the world of the sleep deprived!
He decided to join us about two weeks early on at 3:20 a.m. July 27th. It
all took place after a fast labour of 5h! Mom went into labour just hours after finishing the Friday morning masters swim at Carleton. Baby, mom and dad are doing great and are now settling into new routines at home.
Our first task is to find the manual. I refuse to believe that they would
ship such a complex product without a manual. :-)
Stats: 3435g (7lbs 9oz) and 53cm (20.9")!"
A picture can be found at: http://lynnmarshall.tripo= d.ca/baby.JPG

Marilyn (x-coach) and Jack Adams joined the Whitecaps for dinner on Thursday, August 8th.  There were 10 people in total and we enjoyed hearing about their travels and looking at photos of their new house (complete with pool!) in Jamaica.

Margaret (8:30am Earlybirds) was in Manchester for part of the Commonwealth Games.  She watched the swimming heats on the first day, and saw some amazing swimmers and swims, including Ian Thorpe in the 400m freestyle.  She sent a postcard which is posted on the pool bulletin board.  Thanks, Margaret!

Lisa O (7:30am Earlybirds) is interested in sharing a locker in the women's change room.  She's willing to pay half.  She'd prefer to find someone who already has a locker, but is also willing to line up for a locker in September, if someone who currently doesn't have a locker would like to share.  You can contact Lisa at lisaokun@hotmail.com or 244-4575.

Summer Session Notes:

Time Trials:
The August Time Trials (TTs) are coming up soon!  There will be a timed distance freestyle swim this week, followed by some (optional) short distance time trials -- 400m or less: you pick the event(s).  Here is the schedule:

Tue Aug 13th/Wed Aug 14th: distance fs TT for all (800m for those >2:00/100fs; 1500m for others)
Thu Aug 15th/Fri Aug 16th: TTs for lane 1 (Whitecaps "B" in deep end)
Mon Aug 19th: TTs for lane 2 (Whitecaps "A" in deep end)
Tue Aug 20th/Wed Aug 21st: TTs for lane 3 (Whitecaps "B" in deep end)
Thu Aug 22nd/Fri Aug 23rd: TTs for lane 4 (Whitecaps "A" in deep end)
Mon Aug 26th: TTs for lane 5 (Whitecaps "B" in deep end)
Tue Aug 27th/Wed Aug 28th: TTs for lane 6 (Whitecaps "A" in deep end)
Thu Aug 29th/Fri Aug 30th: fun day (your suggestions are welcome -- so far we've discussed an inner tube relay, T-shirt relay, the usual fs and medley relays, ...!)

You don't have to do your short distance time trials on exactly the day indicated.  In particular, for the Whitecaps who want to start from a dive, you must do your time trials on a day when your group is in the deep end.

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  I have been doing some longer swims during public swim and often lose track.  I can't see the pace clock and can't see my watch unless I stop swimming.  Can you recommend a watch that I can see without stopping?  Is that 200 or 250m?!

Dear I. T. 250m:  An analog pace clock is much easier to read at a glance than a digital watch, thus prescription goggles are definitely the best way to go.  There are lots of brands available by mail order and they are reasonably priced (US$20-40).  I recently found an Ontario company (this avoids duty), see: http://www.aquagoggles.com. = One swimmer, Steve J (Earlybirds), recommends the following: http://www.swans-spo= rts.com/swim/index.html.  The majority of prescription goggles are intended for short sighted swimmers, but Jim L (Earlybirds) tracked down some prescription goggles for the far-sighted that are available through Vision Plus (Mr. Kavanagh) at 1 Centrepointe Drive (Medical Building), Nepean, phone: 226-7739 (cost around C$70).  If you prefer not to get prescription goggles, you need to find a watch with a large display, or one that you can set to beep every 250m or so, to help you keep track.

Dear Coach:  I am trying to locate Speedo Anti-Fog Drops for my goggles here in town.  I've tried the Orleans Rec Centre, The Running Room, and Sport Chek with no luck.  Any suggestions?  Frustrated.

Dear Frustrated:  Speedo Anti-Fog Drops (and the cheaper TYR version) are available by mail order.  However, I don't know of a local source.  Can anyone help??  Other options (other than the anti-fog drops) are saliva and, I've heard (but never tried this myself!), a drop of dish washing liquid.
