Last Week of the Summer Session
This is the last week of the summer session.  The Whitecaps (6-7:10pm MTuTh) finish on Thursday, August 29th, and the Earlybirds (6:30-7:30am and 7:30-8:30am MWF) finish on Friday, August 30th.  Remember that there are no workouts on the Labour Day Long Weekend (Saturday or Monday).

End of Summer Session Dinner
After Thursday's Whitecaps workout, a group will be going out for dinner to Mexicali Rosa's at Dow's Lake to celebrate the end of the Summer Term.  All are welcome!  Meet at the Tuck Shop around 7:45pm Thursday, August 29th.

Toonie Workout Schedule
We are offering "toonie" workouts for the first two weeks of September, up until the Fall Session starts.  These workouts cost $2 each (pay the coach on deck) and are open to all who have registered for the Fall Masters and High Intensity programs.  All workouts are 6-lanes (one coach) with no child safety supervision offered.  The schedule is:
MWF 7:30-8:30am: Wednesday, September 4th to Friday, September 13th
MTuTh 6-7:10pm: Tuesday, September 3rd to Thursday, September 12th
Sat 9-10am: September 7th and 14th
Mits, Heather, Claudia, Lynn, Kristi and Louise will all be coaching at least one toonie workout.  The coaching schedule is posted on the web page.

Fall Session Information
The Fall Programs officially start on Monday, September 16th.  The Athletics Program Guide with the program information is out and registration is open!  Full details are on the web page.  A summary of programs/prices is given near the end of this newsletter.  Registration is going well.  There is still space in all programs, but register soon to avoid disappointment.  If you plan to swim in the early morning, note that the High Intensity a.m., and the 7:30am Earlybirds are close to half full.  The Fall Saturday coaching schedule is posted on the website, as are the Toonie and Fall workout themes.

Masters Phone/E-Mail List
George (Whitecaps) suggests that we produce a Masters phone / e-mail list.  This information would be shared only with other Carleton Masters swimmers.  If you would like to have your phone number and/or e-mail address included, let me know via e-mail or in person.  If there is sufficient interest, a list will be produced and circulated only to those on the list.

Message from Barb Hale, the Carleton Aquatic Co-ordinator

Hi All! It is good to be back in Athletics. I must say that I am very impressed with the program improvements engineered by Steve Baird and Lynn Marshall. I'm sure that you all are too! In particular, the amount of communication encouraged by the Newsletter is great. I carried around a tattered copy of a workout Tim Kilby made for years, but now all you have to do is check the web if you miss a practice! Amazing. On August 15th, I dropped by the Whitecaps practice and was delighted to see so many people in the water. High registration is good, but a high number of attendees is an even better indictor that the program is well received. I look forward to meeting you all.

Checking in at Tuckshop
We need your help to make the Physical Recreation and Athletics facility run at its optimum. The Tuckshop is our Control Centre and their staff monitor who enters the facility in order to enhance the security of our patrons and
their belongings. They also ensure that all facility users are paying customers. Insisting that people pay for the facilities, programs and equipment they use helps keep costs down for everyone! You can help by checking in prior to each workout and getting a wristband or handstamp.

This fall, Athletics is committed to doing the best ever job ensuring facility safety and security. We are attempting to do this by impressing upon both staff and patrons why checking in at the Tuckshop is important. Your continuing support in this regard is much appreciated.

Ask the Coach

In response to the comments in newsletter #44 on prescription goggles, Derek (Whitecaps) reports that Speedo prescription goggles (for short-sighted swimmers only, I believe) are available at Elgin Sports on Bank Street.  Ensure you check the fit to your face, as many people find they don't seal properly (they have large eye pieces).

Dear Coach:  In the Nightcaps off season, I have been trying to do flip turns in my backyard pool but find that I am flipping far too deeply in the water and therefore scraping my back or banging my head on the bottom of the pool. What is the correct depth and how do you achieve it?  Aspiring Flip Turner with a Sore Back

Dear Aspiring Flip Turner:  There are two aspects to this.  First you must do the flip itself without going too deep.  Secondly, you must push off straight so that you don't go deeper!  If you are hitting the bottom while you are flipping over, then you need to flip over more quickly (ask your coach for some tips).  If you are hitting the bottom after you push off, then you likely don't have your shoulders, hips and feet in a straight horizontal line.  If your shoulders are deeper than your hips and feet, then when you push off you may go down to the bottom, rather than straight off the wall.

Dear Coach:  I can repeat 100s freestyle on 1:45 (getting around 5sec rest).  What repeat times should I be doing my other strokes and IM at to be consistent with my freestyle times?  A Freestyler

Dear A. Freestyler:  The lanes that do 100s free on 1:45, generally do 100s of choice stroke and IM on 2:00.  Thus, I would expect that you could repeat 100IMs and either 100s back or 100s breast on 2:00 (with around the same amount of rest as your freestyle).  If your freestyle is much better than your other strokes, you might find that very challenging.  In that case, on days where the theme is IM or choice, perhaps moving to a slightly slower lane will be more productive.  It's better to move to a lane where you can do the set properly with some rest, rather than swim continuously at the end of a lane that's a bit too fast.  The next lane over usually does 100s choice / IM on around a 2:10 pace.  When the Fall session starts, ask your coach for advice!

Dear Coach:  I am a runner in Arizona who has signed up for a triathlon with a 1k swim.  I have four months to build up to the swim.  Right now I have to stop after 250m.  How should I be training?  Phoenix Runner

Dear P. Runner:  Obviously, training with our Masters team would be too much of a commute for you.  However, my recommendation is to find a Masters club near you and train with them.  You need to build technique, speed and endurance.  A coach and some interval training will work wonders.
