Fall Session Information
The Fall Programs officially started on Monday, September 16th (Tuesday, September 17th for Nightcaps).  Full details can be found on the web page.   The following programs are full: 7:30am Earlybirds, High Intensity 1 (am) and High Intensity 2 (pm).  Nightcaps has just a few spots left.  There is still room in both the 8:30am Earlybirds and Whitecaps.  The Fall Saturday coaching schedule is posted on the website, as are the Toonie and Fall workout themes.

Fall Cancellations / Changes
The Nightcaps workout on Thursday, October 3rd will take place in a 35m long pool due to a waterpolo game.  There is no workout on Monday, October 14th (Thanksgiving) for the Earlybirds and WhitecapsThere is a High Intensity workout (open to all High Intensity swimmers) on Monday, October 14th from 3:30-5:30pm.  High Intensity is cancelled Saturday, September 28th (pm); Saturday, November 23rd (pm); and Monday, November 25th (am).  Remember that you can always check for cancellations / changes on the website!

Masters Phone/E-Mail List
There are a few swimmers interested in George's (Whitecaps) idea of a Masters phone / e-mail list.  This information would be shared only with other Carleton Masters swimmers.  If you would like to have your phone number and/or e-mail address included, please send me the information you would like to appear by the end of September.  A list will be produced and circulated only to those who are on it.  So far I have had only 8 responses!  We need a few more than that to make it worthwhile!

Swimmer Requests / Notes
Carpool Request:  Stephanie Johnson (sejohnso1@hotmail.com) is looking for a carpool to get to/from Whitecaps either from the Alta Vista / Riverside area or from the Ottawa U Smyth campus area.  If you can help, please contact Steph via e-mail.
Parking Query:  Jordan C has heard that parking is a real problem at Brewer these days.  My understanding is that as long as you get there a bit early and read the signs, it's not too bad.  There is also an additional lot down by the river that is a slightly longer walk, but less crowded.  If anyone has any other suggestions/tips, let me know and I'll include them in the next newsletter.
Report on Crazy Swimmer: Tamsin (Whitecaps) sends in this news report of a guy who swam the 2,360 mile Mississippi River in 68 days.  He wore a wetsuit and took shore breaks to sleep overnight, so not quite a "purist" swim, but pretty crazy!  Details at (ensure you cut and paste this onto one line): http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20020910/od_uk_nm/oukoe_life_slovenia_swimmer_1
News from the Williamsons: Diane and John Williamson used to swim with Carleton and moved to the UK a few years ago.  Diane recently sent me an update on them and their four children.  You can read it at: http://lynnmarshall.tripod.ca/diane.txt

Fall Session Notes

In this part of the newsletter, we report on weekday attendance statistics (starting next time), and also let you know of anything special happening in the workouts.  As it's the beginning of the season, most groups are spending a lot of time on technique.  The intensity / distance will increase as time goes on.  If you have any questions/suggestions, please talk to your coach or to me (Lynn) directly.

Here's something to inspire you to keep swimming, no matter what your age...

Shreveport, Louisiana, US                        September 02, 2002

An 81-year-old Louisiana woman saved an 83-year-old woman from drowning after the older woman became trapped in a car that had plunged into a pond.

"There wasn't anybody else around," said Carolyn Kelly, who heard the accident and jumped into the water. "I've done a lot of swimming in my time."

The incident occurred yesterday afternoon when driver Harlem Hutchinson, 90, accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brake on his car. Water soon began rising around Hutchinson and his wife, Nina, 83.

Kelly, a fellow resident at the Glen Retirement Village, swam to the passenger's side of the car and held Nina Hutchinson's head out of the water until fire fighters arrived, officials said. "She seemed to be getting weaker and weaker. And those boys that came in after I called 911 got there in nothing flat," Kelly said. "They took her out of my arms and took care of her." Harlem Hutchinson was able to get out of the car and swim to shore. Nina Hutchinson was listed in serious condition and her husband was in good condition yesterday at Louisiana State University Hospital in Shreveport. "She was definitely a hero," said Luther Sharbono, a fire district chief.

The Hutchinsons and Kellys have lived at the retirement home for about a year.

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  I am a triathlete and my season is over.  For the next few months I want to focus on easy aerobic work in my swimming, cycling and running.  Should I move down a lane at the pool and back off a bit?  Tri-ing Too Hard?

Dear T. T. Hard:  As the session is just starting, the level of intensity in your usual lane should be lower than it was at the end of last term.  The intensity and distance will be increasing as we go through the term.  However, if you want to spend extra time focusing on technique, moving down a lane is a great idea.

Private and Semi-Private Masters Lessons

For those who want to take semi-private lessons (2-3 students), the cost per student for Carleton Members is $21 for 1 hour, $39 for 2, $54 for 3, $67.20 for 4, and $79.20 for 5 hours, all plus GST.  Semi-private lessons for non-Members cost (per student) $30 for 1 hour, $51 for 2, $69 for 3, $85.20 for 4, and $97.20 for 5 hours, all plus GST.
