Newsletter Receiver List
I am cleaning up the newsletter receiver lists to better reflect who is actually registered in each group (see above).  If you are not planning to register for Masters or High Intensity this Fall, but would like to continue receiving the newsletter, please drop me an e-mail, if you have not already done so.  Last call!

Fall Session Information
The Fall Programs officially started on Monday, September 16th (Tuesday, September 17th for Nightcaps).  Full details can be found on the web page.   The following programs are full: 7:30am Earlybirds, High Intensity 1 (am) and High Intensity 2 (pm).  Nightcaps has just a few spots left.  There is still room in both the 8:30am Earlybirds and Whitecaps.  The Fall Saturday coaching schedule is posted on the website, as are the Toonie and Fall workout themes.  (It's interesting that although the 7:30am Earlybirds is full and the 8:30am is not, we've had more swimmers at 8:30am for three of the last four weekday workouts!)

Carleton Aquatics Coordinator
Steve Baird has taken over again as Aquatics Co-ordinator, as Barb Hale has left Carleton University to pursue other career opportunities.  We welcome Steve back to this role.  Steve can be reached at SteveBaird@pigeon.carleton.ca or 520-2600 x8444.

Masters Phone/E-Mail List
There are a few swimmers interested in George's (Whitecaps) idea of a Masters phone / e-mail list.  This information would be shared only with other Carleton Masters swimmers.  If you would like to have your phone number and/or e-mail address included, please send me your information.  A list will be produced and circulated only to those who are on it.  So far I have 13 responses!  This is the last call for participants!

Swimmer Requests / Notes

Carpool Request:  (As there was no response last time, I'm including this a second time!)  Stephanie Johnson (sejohnso1@hotmail.com) is looking for a carpool to get to/from Whitecaps either from the Alta Vista / Riverside area or from the Ottawa U Smyth campus area.  If you can help, please contact Steph via e-mail.

Hockey Tickets, anyone?  Thursday, January 16th, 2003 at 7pm, Ottawa Senators vs the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, is the third annual Carleton Raven's Hockey Night at the Corel Centre.  The Varsity Swim team is selling 300-level tickets for $42 (a $60 value).  $10 from each ticket sold goes to the team and will help fund the training camp in Florida over New Year's.  Tickets are on sale from now until early December.  Ask Lynn for details.

Baby Nils at Workout:  Anna and Anders (7:30am Earlybirds) brought Nils (8 weeks old) to workout for the first time on Monday, September 30th.  He was quite happy sitting by the pool!

Swimming in New York's Hudson River:  Thanks to Tamsin for bringing this article to my attention.  It discusses the clean up that's taken place and the races held in this river each year.  See: http://www.nytimes.com/2002/10/01/nyregion/01SWIM.html?ex=3D1034= 579583&ei=3D1&en=3D5a42b1aa7b73a08e

Fall Session Notes

In this part of the newsletter, we report on all the weekday attendance statistics (starting next time), and also let you know of anything special happening in the workouts.  As it's the beginning of the season, most groups are spending a lot of time on technique.  This coming week will be fly week!   If you would like to do some work on turns the following week, let your coach know.  If you have any questions/suggestions, please talk to your coach or to me (Lynn) directly.

As a sneak preview on the attendance statistics...  There are five 7:30am Earlybird, five 8:30am Earlybird, and 3 High Intensity swimmers with perfect weekday attendance to date:
7:30am Earlybirds: Isla, Jeff F, Jim L, John B, Sean (attendance range: 18-33, average: 25.7)
8:30am Earlybirds: Alan H, Christianne, Jo-Ann H, Penny, Renee (attendance range: 16-24, average: 21.0)

Lane Etiquette
As we have some new swimmers, it's worth going over some Masters lane etiquette.  If you have any questions as to how the lane swimming works, just ask your coach!
1. be aware of where your lane mates are at all times
2. those swimming have right of way over those not swimming
  - never rest in front of the cross at the end of the lane (keep out of the way)
  - if everyone is swimming together, ensure that those bringing up the rear have space to touch the wall
3. if you are going to stop, keep to the side you are swimming on (next to the lane rope) -- don't cross over (unless everyone is swimming together and you are all stopping)
4. if you are going to continue onto the next length without stopping, move to the middle or far side of the lane before turning
5. start at least 5 sec apart on every repeat (never start right in front of or right behind someone)
6. ensure that everyone starts each set together and that all follow the pace times / distances for your lane
  - if you are having trouble keeping with the others in your lane or understanding the set, let the coach know
  - if someone gets confused, let them know where you are in the set
7. pass with care
  - if the person you are passing does not seem aware that you are there, a small tap on the feet may be appropriate

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  I am registered with the 8:30am Masters, but occasionally have an early meeting at work on Monday.  Is it ok if I attend the 7:30am workout on those days?  Aiming For Perfect Attendance

Dear A. F. P. Attendance:  As long as there is space in the pool, you are welcome to attend the earlier workout.  Those registered with the 7:30am group have priority, so if the pool was already at capacity, I would suggest that you swam in public swim in the shallow end, instead.  As public swim tends to be less crowded from 7:30-8:30am than it is from 6:30-7:30am, you should be able to get a swim in one way or another.

Dear Coach: I am registered with the 7:30am Masters and occasionally have a very early meeting on Wednesday.  Can I attend the 6:30am workout on those days?  Another Swimmer Aiming For Perfect Attendance

Dear A. S. A. F. P. Attendance:  The 6:30am Masters workout will start up again in late February.  Until then, it's the Varsity / High Intensity group that's in the pool before the 7:30am Masters and they start at 6am.  As the regular Masters and the High Intensity group are funded differently, you cannot mix-and-match between the two groups.

Private and Semi-Private Masters Lessons

Prices for private lessons for Carleton Members are $35 for 1 hour, $65 for 2, $90 for 3, $112 for 4 and $132 for 5 hours, all plus GST.  Private lessons are also available to non-Members at a higher cost ($50, $85, $115, $142 and $162, all plus GST, for 1-5 hours, respectively).

For those who want to take semi-private lessons (2-3 students), the cost per student for Carleton Members is $21 for 1 hour, $39 for 2, $54 for 3, $67.20 for 4, and $79.20 for 5 hours, all plus GST.  Semi-private lessons for non-Members cost (per student) $30 for 1 hour, $51 for 2, $69 for 3, $85.20 for 4, and $97.20 for 5 hours, all plus GST.

Private lesson times for Fall/Winter are: 4-5pm Monday, and 7:15-8pm Tuesday/Thursday.  Prices may increase slightly.

Contact Lynn for details/availability (very few times left before the end of the year).
