Program Dates
Note that the High Intensity program ends on Monday, February 17th.  The Very Earlybirds (6:30-7:30am MWF plus 8-9am or 9-10am Sat) starts on Wednesday, February 26th.  The workouts for all other Masters groups continue as usual during Carleton's reading week (Feb 17-21st).  Public swims are also held at the usual times during this period (ask for a list).

Swim Suit Order
We are still awaiting arrival of the remaining suits of our original order.  I do not have an update at this time.  As some swimmers are regretting not having ordered suits this time, we'll do another order in March or April -- let me know if you're interested.

Winter Session
The winter session has started, except for the Very Earlybirds (6:30am group) that starts Wed Feb 26th after the Varsity season ends.  The High Intensity, 7:30am Earlybirds, and the Child Safety Supervision groups are full.  There is room to register in the other groups (Very Earlybirds, 8:30am Earlybirds, 6pm Whitecaps and 8pm Nightcaps).  If you plan to switch to the 6:30am Very Earlybirds group when it starts up, please ensure that the office is aware of your intentions so that numbers can be correctly tracked.

In addition to being able to register in person or over the phone (520-4480), you can register on-line if you have a Visa or MasterCard.  Go to: http://www.carleton.ca/athletics/programs/index.html and click on "Register Here" to register on-line.  Full details on the programs is available is on the club website (http://carletonmasters.tripod.com).

Swimmer Notes

Lisa B (Whitecaps) and Eric S report the birth of their son Ian Bromley Skinner, on Tue Jan 21st (his due date) at 11:06pm through natural childbirth.  Ian weighed 9lbs 13oz at birth and is thriving!

Swim Caps:  All the swim caps donated by Jim Y (Earlybirds) have been sold to good homes, with $30 being raised for the club!  If anyone else has extra swim caps gathering dust to donate to the club (triathletes?), your fellow swimmers will be happy.

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  I have been working on improving my turns and sometimes they work and sometimes they don't.  Do you have any hints on how to judge the wall correctly.  Turning Faster

Dear T. Faster:  Basically, it just takes practice.  You need to start thinking about your distance from the wall when you go past the flags.  You may need to slightly lengthen or shorten your last couple of strokes so that you end up the right distance from the wall (neither too close or too far).  Start by keeping track of the number of strokes you do from the flags to the wall, and once you figure out the right number (for you) try to keep it consistent.

Dear Coach:  Is there any chance that the long distance IM workouts be dropped from the workout rotation or some lanes be given a choice of shorter distances?  It seems that many in our lane do not make the pace times and/or choose to leave early on those days.  Not a Long Distance IM Fan

Dear N. L. D. I. M. Fan:  How do other swimmers feel about the long distance IM theme?  Let me know.  If there's ever any workout that isn't working out for your lane due to the pace times, distance, number of swimmers, etc., you need to let your coach know.  The guideline for long distance IM is that most swims are IM and most distances are 200m plus.  This does allow coaches to mix in some shorter distances and/or non-IM.  I've passed on this comment to all the coaches and asked that they ensure their workouts are accessible to all.  However, please let your coach know when you particularly dislike (or like!) a workout.
