Swimmer Notes

8:30am Earlybird News:  The 8:30am Earlybirds group met at Treats after workout on Wednesday, April 2nd to celebrate the end of the Winter term, and to wish Dorothy all the best in her new home in Vancouver (she's moving this month).

Volunteer Thanks:  Thanks to Colleen (Whitecaps) who volunteered to time at several sessions of the Masters Provincials last weekend.  It was nice to see a familiar face when we went up to swim!

Vicki Keith Visits Ottawa: On Sunday, May 25th Vicki Keith (famous Canadian marathon swimmer, best known for swimming across the Great Lakes doing butterfly!) is speaking at Trinity Presbyterian Church (110 McCurdy Drive, Kanata) Services at 9am and 11am and at the Youth Service at St Stephens Presbyterian Church (579 Parkdale) at 7pm.  Call 836-1429 for more information.

Orleans Townhouse for Rent:  Three bedroom townhouse, garage, fireplace, skylight, central air, central vac, 5 appliances. Close to shopping, schools and several express buses. Quick access to the Queensway.  Contact Tarek (Whitecaps/Varsity Coach) at tarek.raafat@rogers.com

Summer Sublet: Well-furnished bedroom for non-smoker in 4 bedroom house (access to fully equipped kitchen and laundry) available for sublet May 1st - August 31st.  House is located at Prince of Wales and Baseline (near the Greek Souvlaki House!), and is a 10min walk to campus (15min to Athletics).  Rent is $533/month + utilities (negotiable).  Contact Diana (Carleton Pool Lifeguard) at 225-6585.

Ian McCloy:  Several people asked for more details about Ian McCloy (the Masters swimmer who died in early March at age 44 of an apparent heart).  Ian never swam with Carleton Masters, he swam for the Olympic Gold Masters (OGM) in Sudbury, so only those who compete would know him.  In 2001 he said that his body had "shutdown" during a 1500 race at Provincials.  He was later found to have had a virus that had caused pericarditis (inflammation of the lining of the heart) which, by the time it was diagnosed, had caused permanent damage to his heart.  Thus he had to significantly modify his exercise regime and had not been competing for the past two years.  The apparent heart attack (the autopsy results are not yet available) happened on the first night of his vacation in San Diego.  One of his team-mates has sent a memorial that she wrote: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com/IanMcCloyMemorial.txt
Swim Suit Order:  The second order was sent in last weekend.  Most suits (including those remaining from the first order) should arrive in time for the May session.  (We'll put in another order in the summer.)

Nose Clips:  A new order of noseclips has arrived.  Cost is $5.  Contact Lynn if you are interested.

Broadway and Beyond:  Ursula Scott and Sean Kelly (Very Earlybirds) are selling tickets to Orpheus' big spring show: "Broadway and Beyond" on Wednesday, May 14, 2003 - 7:30 p.m. at Centrepointe Theatre.  This event is in support of the Orpheus Choral Group, of which Ursula and Sean are members.  In addition to a concert including Broadway, gospel and Celtic music by the Choral Group, there will be entertainment by other Orpheus performers.  Tickets are $15.  E-mail Ursula (Ursula_Scott@hc-sc.gc.ca) or Sean (raven@cyberus.ca) if you would like tickets.

Rent a Cottage in Newfoundland:  Masters swimmer David Coish has a cottage in Freshwater, Newfoundland that he's renting out for $700 per week.  Perfect for the outdoors enthusiast, this 3-bedroom cottage sleeps 6.  Full details at http://www.freshwatercottages.com/.

Golf:  Swim Ontario is hosting a Charity Golf Tournament on May 26th at the Glen Abbey Golf Club (Toronto).  The tournament is aimed at corporations with an entry fee of $425 per player.  There is also an opportunity for corporate sponsorships.  For more information contact: chuck.meklensek@graspit.ca.

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  The note on doing breaststroke without arching the back prompts me to ask if there is any literature on minimizing harmful effects to one's back while swimming.  One Vulnerable Back

Dear O. V. Back:  Generally swimming is good for those with bad backs.  You should ensure that you're keeping your abs tight in all strokes so as not to over arch your back.  However, I don't know of any definitive literature on the subject, as there is a wide range of backs and back problems (we're all different!).   If a particular stroke or drill aggravates your back (or any other body part!), ask your coach to ensure your technique is appropriate.  If the discomfort persists, seek professional medical advice, and avoid the stroke(s) that cause the aggravation.
Here's a quote from: http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/backchat/prevention.shtml:
Gentle exercise can build strong back and stomach muscles to support your spine and maintain flexibility. Walking or cycling are easy to incorporate into your daily lifestyle. Swimming is particularly good for backs, because it strengthens your muscles while supporting your body with water - but some strokes may not suit you, so try and get professional advice.

Dear Coach:  Why is breaststroke before butterfly in a medley relay?  Just Wondering

Dear J. Wondering:  Just to review, for those who don't compete regularly, while IM (Individual Medley) is swum fly-back-breast-free, a MR (Medley Relay) is swum back-breast-fly-free.  The backstroke goes first, as that's the only stroke where you must start in the water.  If a medley relay was done in IM order, it would be both difficult for the backstroker to judge when to start and dangerous as he/she wouldn't be able to see the butterflyer.  However, as to why it's breaststroke that's second and not butterfly, I don't know!  Perhaps one of our the coaches knows the reason?  Stay tuned!
