Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  I saw this list of 5 good freestyle swimming drills in a triathlon newsletter (vertical kick, kick on side, fists closed, single arm, catch up).  The author also recommended using Zoomer fins.  Can you comment on these?  Like Drills

Dear L. Drills:  I agree that using flippers while working on the slower drills is very helpful.  However, I don't think it really matters whether they're regular flippers or the shorter Zoomer ones.  Of the drills you suggested, I think all groups have done kick on the side this week, and Earlybirds and Nightcaps have done fists closed.  I find the vertical kick drill more helpful for fly than freestyle, so we'll do that then, but feel free to try it for freestyle.  I'm not a big fan of catch up freestyle, as most people tend to touch their hands together when the hand enters the water, which encourages a cross-over stroke.  I prefer the dps (distance per stroke drill) that most groups have done this week.  While we won't focus on single arm this week, it's a good drill, as long as you watch the cross-over -- you can try it during drills in warm up.  As always, if you have any questions about these or any other drills, just ask your coach during workout and we will help explain the drill and give you feedback.

Dear Coach:  Over the Carleton shutdown I swam at Ottawa U.  The water at Carleton seems much less wavy than at Ottawa U, and I think I swim faster at Carleton.  Does the pool construction contribute to this?  Have you noticed a difference in speed?  Curious about Pools

Dear C. a. Pools:  There are lots of factors that contribute to how "fast" a pool is.  One of the main considerations is the water level vs the pool edge level.  At Carleton the waves mostly wash over the edge of the pool, which dampens the waves considerably.  At Ottawa U the side of the pool is several inches above the top of the water, so the waves hit the edge and bounce back, making the water much more choppy.  Thus, you are right that Carleton is a "faster" pool that U of O.  Other considerations are the width of the lanes (Carleton's are wider) and the number of lane ropes (generally Ottawa U is configured with just one lane rope per 2 lanes).  Other factors include the depth of the water (deeper is better) and the water temperature (78F is about optimal).
