Mini Swim Camp June 21st-22nd
We are hosting a mini-swim camp at Carleton on Saturday, June 21st, 5-7pm and Sunday, June 22nd, 9-11am (note the change of dates).  This camp will give you an opportunity to work on your technique in a small group.  We'll include clinics on all four competitive strokes (fly, back, breast, free), as well as other skills (e.g. starts, turns).  We'll also offer (optional) underwater videotaping on Saturday, including a classroom feedback session after the camp (7:30-8:30pm).  For Carleton Masters, costs are: $50 for both days, $30 for 1-day, plus $20 for videotaping.  For non-Carleton swimmers, costs are: $70 for both days, $40 for 1 day, plus $30 for videotaping.  If you are interested, please reply ASAP indicating whether you'll attend one day or both, the clinics you want to do (2 per session), and if you want to be videotaped on Saturday.  Space is limited!

Swimmer Notes

Men's Sauna Fixed:  At long last, the new unit has arrived and the men's sauna is again functional!

Please Shower Before Masters:  In an attempt to improve the water quality, the Carleton pool staff is asking that all swimmers shower before swimming.  Staff will be monitoring this as of June 15th.

Membership / Masters Registration Audits:  Starting later this month, Carleton Athletics staff will be checking that everyone in the Athletics building has a valid membership and that all those participating in any Carleton Athletics program are properly registered.  Your cooperation in producing your membership card, wristband or handstamp upon request, as well as in ensuring that you've registered for Masters is greatly appreciated!

Swim Suit Order:  I'm still waiting for the last 5 suits -- I'll let you know as soon as I have an update.  If anyone is interested in ordering club suits, let me know -- another order is going in next week -- please e-mail me ASAP!

Nose Clips for Sale:  Cost $5.  Contact Lynn if you are interested.

Perfumed Products in the Showers:  Many of you have noticed that perfumed products used in the showers are very noticeable (and unpleasant!) on the pool deck.  Please help by using unscented products at the pool!

Swimming and Asthma?:  There has been some mention in the news lately of a Belgian study linking chlorine to asthma in children.  This is the most informative article on this that I've found: http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/05/29/1054177672747.html.   I also found an article from a year ago, from a UK study: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/1959788.stm.  If anyone has seen any other interesting articles, let me know.

Spring Session

In this part of the newsletter I'll keep you up to date on information on the Spring session.  If you have any questions or suggestions, let me know.  Note that we'll be using flippers for the main set at Nightcaps this Thursday (June 5th) and at Earlybirds this Friday (June 6th).  Other upcoming events for all groups include an 800/1500m freestyle time trial June 10-11th, and short distance time trials June 12-25th.  There will be a "fun day" on June 26-27th (relays, etc.), with Saturday June 28th being the last day of the Spring session.

May 24th 12 Hours of Beachburg Mountain Bike Race:
Congrats to Iyad (6:30am Earlybirds) who finished 4th in this gruelling race through the mud -- it sounds like he spent more time carrying his bike than riding!  Due to the dangerous conditions the race was stopped at 8 hours, to Iyad's disappointment, as he was doing so well and gaining on those ahead of him.  He's planning a 24 hour race next!  Full results at: http://www.racenow.ca/beachburg_results.html

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  How can I check whether there will be a workout on a particular date or not?  I'm never sure when the cancellations are!  Also, is there a pattern to the workout themes?  Newbie Swimmer

Dear N. Swimmer:  This information is on the website: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com (note: there is no "www" in the address).  All cancellations are listed -- check under the group you swim with.  There is also a link to a file with the workout themes for the entire Spring/Summer.

Dear Coach:  Can you tell me why there's no child safety supervision on Saturdays in July/August?  A Parent

Dear A. Parent:  Steve, our Aquatics Coordinator, likes to ensure that his staff have shifts of a reasonable length (i.e. at least a couple of hours).  Normally the Saturday safety supervisor stays on after Masters to teach children's swimming lessons.  As there are no lessons after the Saturday Masters workout in July/August, it's not appropriate to ask someone to come in for just one hour of work.

Dear Coach:  I enjoyed the lactate tolerance (sprint) set on Monday morning.  Can we do that more often?  I Enjoy Suffering

Dear I. E. Suffering:  Only those who are competing regularly really need to do lactate tolerance (sprint) sets frequently.  Thus, we generally offer this option only about once per month.  However, if you want to do sprints more often, talk to your coach and we'll work something out!

Dear Coach:  I want to concentrate on triathlons this summer.  Is there any benefit in doing any strokes other than freestyle in my training?  Wanna-Be Triathlete

Dear W.-B. Triathlete:  I strongly recommend against swimming nothing but freestyle.  Even triathletes should spend 1/3 to 1/2 (or more) of their training focusing on the other strokes.  First, it helps avoid overuse injuries -- lots of freestyle is very hard on the shoulders/neck.  It also leads to more balanced body development, as well as a better feel for the water.  Other strokes (especially breast and fly) tend to make you go anaerobic more quickly (i.e. are more tiring) and thus are very good for building your endurance/speed.  It's also important to vary the workouts in terms of repeat distance and the speed you're swimming at (as well as the stroke).  If you do nothing but moderate-paced long distance freestyle (or long slow distance anything), you will plateau very quickly.  Varying the stroke, speed, distance, etc., will ensure that your body is continually adapting to the additional load and thus becoming stronger.

Dear Coach:  What do you recommend as a swim warm up if I'm unable to get in the water at a triathlon, either because there is no scheduled warm up or because I'm afraid I'll get cold standing around wet before the start if I do go in to the open water to warm up?  A Triathlete

Dear A. Triathlete:  Start with your usual swim-oriented dry-land warm up.  That means warming up for 5-10 minutes through dynamic stretching (e.g. arm and leg swings) and/or a light aerobic exercise (e.g. walking).  After that proceed to static stretching of the major muscles you'll be using (arms, shoulders, neck, legs).  If you find you need a really long swim warm up to be ready, you may want to try using surgical tubing to get the arms moving with some resistance.  Also, make sure you keep warm before the start of the race to avoid injury.
