Civic Holiday Cancellation
Note that there will be no Masters workouts on the August Civic Holiday, Monday, August 4th.  For those who want to swim that day, there is a public swim from 11:45-3:30pm.  (All Masters swimmers can swim in public swim for free -- this is one of the benefits of your regular or swim-only membership.)  There is a workout 9-10am Saturday, August 2nd.

Memberships and Fall/Winter Session
Those who have been swimming with Masters in 2002-2003 and whose memberships are expiring soon, should have received information in the mail on renewing their annual memberships at the 2002-2003 rate (membership prices are going up approximately 8% on August 1st).  To get the 2002-2003 rate on your membership renewal, you must renew by August 1st.  The preview of the Fall/Winter Sessions is included near the end of the newsletter (unchanged from last time).  Registration opens on August 1st.  Note that some groups traditionally fill up in the Fall Term, especially the 7:30am Earlybirds, Nightcaps, and High Intensity.  Register early to avoid disappointment!

John Baxter's Fundraising
Several people have asked how John Baxter (7:30am Earlybirds)'s fundraising is going for his trip to Buenos Aires this September to compete in the Deaf Pan-Am Games.  The July BBQ raised $530.  John still needs to raise an additional $1000.  If anyone is interested in contributing to this great cause, details can be found at: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com/panam.jpg.  A tax receipt will be issued.

Lane Etiquette
Here's a review on lane etiquette!  First, the whole point behind joining Masters is to swim as a group.  Thus, please make an effort to keep your lane together, especially during the main set.  If you arrive late for warm up, start with a bit of freestyle and then jump ahead so that you're doing the same thing as everyone else.  For the main set, ensure that everyone in the lane understands the set and pace times, then agree on an order for your lane, and on when you're going to start.  If you are regularly getting way ahead of your lane-mates or having trouble keeping up, ask your coach if there is a better lane for you.

If the main set has some long repeats, it may be that the lead swimmer(s) lap those at the end of the lane.  Our lanes are quite wide, so you should be able to pass or be passed without stopping -- i.e. you should normally swim in no more than 1/3 of the width of the lane.  The key thing is to be aware of where your lane-mates are.  Generally, the passing swimmer swims on the black line to get around the slower swimmer.  If you choose to stop to let someone by (or if you're stopped for any other reason) ensure that you stop by the lane rope in the corner of the lane so that there's lots of space for your lane-mates to do their turns.  When you are approaching the wall, cross over towards the other side of the lane before doing your turn (so that you turn in the middle or slightly past) to avoid a collision with the person behind you.

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  I got the information in the mail about renewing my membership before August 1st to get the 2002-2003 membership rates.  Does the same deal apply to Masters registration?  Very Organized Swimmer

Dear V.O. Swimmer:  This deal applies only to the membership rates.  Full details on prices for Fall/Winter Masters will be published this week.

Dear Coach:  I want to swim with the Nightcaps this Fall and I'm concerned that with the double cohort of new students, it will be difficult to get a spot in the class.  Is there a way I can reserve a spot?  Another Very Organized Swimmer

Dear A.V.O. Swimmer:  Most of the new students won't find out about the Athletics programs offered until they arrive on campus in early September.  Thus as long as you register in early August (registration starts August 1st), you should have no problem getting a space.  (There is no way to reserve a spot before registration opens.)

Dear Coach:  Do you think I'm ready for the Meech Lake 4k swim given that I'm swimming just 3x/wk?  Or do I need to do some additional long distance swims?  To Swim 4k or Not to Swim 4k

Dear T.S.4.o.N.t.S. 4k:  You'll have no trouble finishing the 4k with your current training.  If you were able to get in and do a couple of long swims (in the pool -- doesn't have to be in open water), just so you're confident about the distance, that would be even better (but not necessary).  I'm happy to suggest some extra workouts -- just ask.

Fall/Winter Session Preview
Some of you are already looking ahead to the Fall and asking what Masters programs will be available.  Full details will be available shortly and will be posted on the website.  Registration will start August 1st.  The Fall session will start on Monday, September 15th.  (For the first two weeks of September we will likely run a few $3 workouts if there is enough interest -- more details in a future newsletter.)

The regular Masters programs offered for Fall/Winter (i.e. mid-September to December, and January to April) are as follows: 7:30am Earlybirds, 8:30am Earlybirds, 6pm Whitecaps, and 8pm Nightcaps (back to the usual 8-9pm TuTh plus Sat am).  The 6:30am Earlybirds will resume after the Varsity Season ends and will run mid-March to April.  Child Safety Supervision will be offered at the 6pm Whitecaps workouts plus the 9am Saturday workout.

There will also be three High Intensity Masters programs offered.  These groups train with the Varsity team during the Varsity season (mid-September to February).  Swimmers must be able to repeat 100s free on 1:45 or less and 100s of other strokes on 2:00 or better.  Spaces are limited.  The High Intensity groups are: a) 6-7:30am MWF; b) 7:30-9:30am TuTh (Th is Long Course); and c) 7:15-9pm M, 6-7:40pm W, and 5-7pm Sat.

For the Fall/Winter session, the Whitecaps coaches will be Blake ("A" Group) and Mits ("B" Group).  Louise will coach the Nightcaps and Lynn will coach the Earlybirds.  Saturday mornings will be on a rotation among regular and substitute coaches.  For High Intensity, John will coach the evening workouts and Lynn will coach the mornings.
