Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  What's the rule for the turn from fly to back and from breast to free?  Do I have to touch the wall with both hands?  Can I do a flip turn from back to breast?  Learning Turns

Dear L. Turns:  When you change from one stroke to another in an IM, the turn is considered a finish of the first stroke and a start of the second stroke, thus the rules for the starts/finishes apply.  Thus for fly to back, you must touch the wall with both hands simultaneously and then push off on your back.  For breast to free, you again must touch the wall with both hands together but can push off any way you like (front, back, side).  For back to breast, you must touch the wall while still on your back (any part of the body will do, but one hand is recommended :-) , and then push off on your front.
