General Notes
The last newsletter was late and this one is early (due to some time-sensitive announcements).  The next one should be out on time, and will have the attendance and time trial summary for the Fall term.  Note that the web site has not been updated in a couple of weeks due to Tripod technical difficulties which should be resolved in a few days.

Masters Christmas Pot Luck Party
Here are a few clarifications about the Christmas party: First, it's open to Masters from all groups (Earlybirds, Whitecaps, Nightcaps, High Intensity).  Secondly, spouses/partners and children are welcome.  And, finally, although the official schedule says that dessert is served until 10pm only, if you can't make it until later, the party usually lasts until around midnight!

Many thanks to Don, Joanie (both Whitecaps), Sam and Ben (both Safety Supervision) who have agreed to host the Masters Christmas Party again this year, starting at 6pm on Sat Dec 13th.  It's Pot Luck and BYOB.  Full details and map at: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com/XmasParty.html or go to the main page (http://carletonmasters.tripod.com) and click on the link just above the information on the Fall session.

Rudy Awards
The following article appeared in the Ottawa Citizen on Mon Dec 1st.  Rudy swims with the 7:30am Earlybirds.
Triathlete Hollywood stars in own version of Rudy     Martin Cleary
In 1999, triathlon guru Rudy Hollywood was discussing the five major stepping stones of his Hawaii Ironman world triathlon championship training program with Rick Hellard, a former pro triathlete and an Ottawa endurance coach.  Hollywood, a Richmond resident, talked with enthusiasm about his five varied and adventurous competitions: the Winterlude Triathlon, which was 18 kilometres of skating, cross-country skiing and running; the 50-kilometre Keskinada cross-country ski loppet; the Rideau Lakes cycling tour, which measured 360 kilometres over two days; a 42.195-kilometre marathon; and an Ironman, which was the ultimate test comprising a 3.86-kilometre swim, a 180.2-kilometre cycle and a marathon. "I said, 'Wouldn't it be neat to put the challenge out there to see if anyone else was up to it?'" Hellard said. The challenge went public in 2001 and the region's multisport community has embraced the Rudy Award like NHL players to the Stanley Cup. In it's inaugural year, nine well-trained athletes completed the five tasks to earn their plaque of honour. Last year, the honour roll swelled to 12.   On Saturday, Hollywood will reward 22 athletes. A silent auction also will be held to help Hollywood pay for the plaques. Ottawa athletes have a history of being challenged by the big test. In the 1980s, athletes could pick up the Dr. Don Johnson Award for doing long distance races in canoeing, running, cycling and cross country skiing. In the late 1990s, it was revived as the Hat Trick Award, involving the Canadian Ski Marathon, a marathon and 200 kilometres of cycling.   "We thought it would be neat to attempt to reinstate something similar involving triathlons and the Ironman," said the 58-year-old Hollywood, who will receive his third Rudy Award. "It's a great stepping stone to building an all-year endurance program to get through an Ironman." Since there was an Ironman meet nearby in Lake Placid, New York, it made the Rudy Award realistic. Still, the award winners also race Ironmans and marathons throughout North America. The Rudy Award isn't for every athlete because of the amount of training required for the endurance events. In the future, Hollywood said the Bridges Award could be introduced as a transition honour. The award would be named after Catherine Bridges, a triathlete who is recovering from an automobile accident. Cost prevented the introduction of the Bridges Award this season, but Grant Thompson will be verbally recognized at the Rudy Awards function for meeting all six Bridges' criteria: A half Ironman, a half marathon, an Olympic distance triathlon, a Keskinada 25-kilometre race, volunteering at an Ironman or Kids of Steel triathlon and cycling 100 kilometres of the Rideau Lakes tour.   This year's list of Rudy Award winners features Ann-Lisa Charron, Ann Coros, Brenda Oatway, Zoe Panchen, Ann Chapman, Mike Wall,   Marcel Brugger, Dale Costello, Scott Hall, Rene Dionne, Pierre St. Amour, Chris Macknie, Cory Plant, John Hetherington, Eric Haanpaa, Alex Balaban, Paul McAneney, Dave Maskel, Denis Morel, Mike Giles, Henry Dressler and Hollywood.   Coros, 35, called winning the Rudy Award for the second consecutive year "a big accomplishment" not only because she completed the events, but also because she stayed healthy and uninjured in the process.   Finishing the windy and rainy Ironman triathlon in Lake Placid was her 2003 highlight.   "It was such a breakthrough race for me," said Coros, who beat her previous best time on that course by almost two hours. "It made me realize I can face adversity and do even better than I expected I would do in perfect conditions. I was in such a positive frame of   mind. That's the key. Now I can carry that with me into future races.

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  I am currently swimming with the MWF morning High Intensity group and I want to switch to the Very Earlybird (6:30am) Masters group when High Intensity ends.  Is that possible?  Early Morning Swimmer

Dear E.M. Swimmer:  The High Intensity group finishes on Monday, March 1st, and the Very Earlybirds starts on Wednesday, March 10th, so the groups don't overlap and you can certainly sign up for both.  You can already register for the Very Earlybirds on-line or through the office.

Dear Coach:  I am prone to ear infections.  I currently can't swim due to my ear infection, can you recommend some upper body weights so I won't lose all my swimming fitness?  Missing Swimming

Dear M. Swimming:  As with any medical condition, always seek medical advice.  Once you have the go ahead to start swimming again, I recommend putting drops in your ears after each swim to avoid the infection recurring.  You can buy drops at the pharmacy or make your own by mixing mostly rubbing alcohol with a small amount of vinegar or hydrogen peroxide.

As for what to do in the gym...  The best exercise is to do swimming like motions with surgical tubing -- tie hand holds in each end and wrap the middle around a post (you probably need 8-10ft).  Stand back so that there is already some tension and then do the underwater part of freestyle either alternating arms or with both arms together.  Recover under your body, rather than over as you would do in the pool.  If that's not available, good exercises to do in the gym (with weights) are: lat pull downs, seated rowing, tricep extensions, straight arm pull downs, lateral raises, and (if you don't have any shoulder problems) bench press.  If you prefer to work with your own body weight, then pull ups, dips, push ups, etc., are all good, too.  And, of course, abs work is also important for swimming.
