Time Trial and Relay Summary:
The information below on most improved and fastest swimmers is taken from the time trials done in December, and includes the relay splits I have.  Times done in competitions are not included.  If your times are not listed here, just ask or e-mail me for details.  (I have all time trial times recorded since May 2001.)

Fifteen women and eighteen men improved in at least one event (see list below).  The most improved is Natalie A (EB2) who improved her 50fl by 8.2 seconds (16.4sec/100m!).  She was followed closely by Joanne D (WCA) who improved her 1500fs by 3:23 (13.5sec/100m!).  The most improved male is Kevin N (WCA) who improved his 1500fs by 2:40 (10.7sec/100m!).  He was followed closely by Chris K (EB2) who improved his 50fs by 4.7 seconds (9.4sec/100m!).  Also improving by over 5.0sec/100m were Mark Hynes (NC) [59 seconds (8.4/100m) in 800fs] and Renee (EB2) [2.9 seconds (5.8/100m) in 50fl].

The International Point Scores (link to web page below) are used to determine the best swims.  There were 24 women (19 non-Varsity) and 23 men (13 non-Varsity) who scored 300 points or more in at least one event.  The non-Varsity swimmers scoring over 400 points were, for the women, Mary Beth (WCA) with 459 points in 1500fs, and, for the men, David M (EB1) with 520 points in 50fs; Don W (WCA) with 496 points in 800fs; Francois A, Jim W, and Iain A (all EB1) with 476, 468 and 429 points, respectively in 50fs, and Tom M (WCA) with 401 points in 1500fs.  Leading the (exhibition) Varsity swimmers were Krista with 751 points in 50br and John M with 734 points in 50fl.  Keegan, Paola and Lynn also scored over 700 points.

The improvements in each event and the top 3 times for each event are also listed below, as are the results of the December 19th relays.  Thanks to all who participated!  As always, let me know if you notice any errors or omissions.

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  Does the 7:30am Earlybirds switch to 6:30am in March, or can I continue swimming at 7:30am?  Puzzled

Dear Puzzled:  The 7:30am Earlybirds runs (nearly) year-round, and you're welcome to stay in that group.  The 6:30am group will be an addition and it runs mid-March to August (using the pool time reserved for the Varsity team from September to early March).

Dear Coach:  I breathe every three strokes in freestyle when I'm swimming at a moderate pace.  However, when I'm swimming longer distances at a very fast pace, I find that I need to switch to breathing every 2 strokes.  Is that ok?  Sometimes Non-Bilateral Breather

Dear S.N-B. Breather:  Over the course of your workout, you want to try to breathe (approximately) the same number of times on each side, to keep your stroke symmetrical and avoid injury.  Breathing every two strokes while swimming fast is ok, as long as you either alternate the side that you breathe on by 25m (or 50m), or ensure that you do some of your slower swimming breathing mostly on your other side, to even things out.  Ask your coach to look at your stroke both at a moderate and a fast speed to check that there are no major differences in the left and right sides of your stroke.

Dear Coach:  I saw the information on the men's waterpolo league.  Is there anything similar for women?  I'd Like to Try Waterpolo

Dear I.L.t.T. Waterpolo:  There is a women's league but it's currently winding down for the season.  To get a good introduction to the sport, if you're a beginner, the Carleton summer league (that runs May-August on Wed/Sat evenings is recommended).
