Facilities Audit / Winter Program Registration
If you are swimming in a Winter Masters group or just using the Carleton Athletics facilities, note that an audit of all users will be conducted starting the week of January 12th.  All users *must* show their athletics membership card to gain access to the facilities (or pay a $9 day fee) and *must* be registered for any program in which they participate (class lists will be checked).  Athletics memberships can be purchased through the Athletics office in person (2nd floor) or via phone (520-4480) 8:30am-4:30pm M-F.  You can register for all programs in person/phone as per the hours above or on-line 24 hours a day at: http://www.carleton.ca/athletics/programs/index.html.  Note that you should always check in at the Tuck Shop and get a hand stamp or wristband.  This is to ensure that only members are accessing the facilities and will help keep your fees down.  Your cooperation is appreciated!

Winter Masters Groups
The Winter Masters sessions started on Mon Jan 5th or Tue Jan 6th.  There is still room in all groups, but there are just 3 spots left in the 7:30am Masters.  Child safety supervision is full, but contact me if you are interested in this program.  Information on how to register is given above.

Saturday January 24th Technosport Meet
It looks like there will be quite a few Carleton swimmers attending the Sat a.m. Jan 24th Technosport meet at U of Ottawa (details below).  All swimmers registered with MSO are welcome to compete!  Let Lynn know what events you'd like to swim by Mon Jan 12th.

Underwater Hockey Fundraiser:  The National Underwater Hockey team is raising money so they can participate in the world championships in New Zealand in March.  They are selling tickets to the 2pm Sun Jan 25th Ottawa 67's hockey game vs Guelph.  All seats are in the lower bowl and cost $13, of which $5 goes to the National Underwater Hockey team.  For tickets and more information, contact Will Litchfield (x-Carleton Varsity team) at canadian@peru.com.

Winter Session Information
This part of the newsletter keeps you up to date as to the workout plan (full details are available on the web site and bulletin board), and, starting next time, I'll include the (weekday) attendance statistics.  Maybe your New Year's Resolution should be to see your name in the perfect attendance list for this Masters session?!

For the first four weeks of the term we are focusing on stroke drills.  This week is freestyle (front crawl).  Next week is breaststroke, followed by backstroke the third week, with (everyone's favourite!) fly in week four.

If you have any questions about the Masters program, please don't hesitate to ask!

My apologies to Jo-Ann H (8:30am Earlybirds) for missing her 1:15 (5sec/100m) improvement in 1500m free from the list last time -- that is the 4th biggest improvement by a woman in Fall 2003.

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  I want to join Masters but I will have to miss one day per week due to a previous commitment.  Is that permitted?  Interested Swimmer

Dear I. Swimmer:  There are very few swimmers who manage to maintain perfect attendance, and there is no minimum attendance requirement.  Of course, you will learn more and improve more quickly if you attend most of the workouts.  The last newsletter showed that there was a strong correlation between the most improved swimmers and those with the best attendance!!

Dear Coach:  I'm away for the month of January.  Can I join Masters in February?  Vacationer

Dear Vacationer:  As long as there is still space in the group that you are interested in, you can join part way through the term.  Note, however, that you will miss the first four weeks which concentrate on stroke technique and drills.  Contact the Athletics Office (see the top of the newsletter) for details on pro-rated prices.

2003-2004 prices for private lessons for Carleton Members are $36.75 for 1 hour, $68.25 for 2, $94.50 for 3, $117.60 for 4 and $138.60 for 5 hours, all plus GST.  Private lessons are also available to non-Members at a higher cost ($52.50, $89.25, $120.75, $149.10 and $170.10, all plus GST, for 1-5 hours, respectively).

For those who want to take semi-private lessons (2-3 students), the cost per student for Carleton Members is $22.05 for 1 hour, $40.95 for 2, $56.70 for 3, $70.56 for 4, and $83.16 for 5 hours, all plus GST.  Semi-private lessons for non-Members cost (per person) $31.50 for 1 hour, $53.55 for 2, $72.45 for 3, $89.46 for 4, and $102.06 for 5 hours, all plus GST.
