Winter Masters Groups
The Winter Masters sessions started on Mon Jan 5th or Tue Jan 6th.  Full details are available on the web site: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com.  There is still room in all groups except the 7:30am Masters (contact me if you are interested in this group -- spaces have opened up now that the 6:30am group has started).  Note also that child safety supervision is full.  Athletics memberships can be purchased through the Athletics office in person (2nd floor) or via phone (520-4480) 8:30am-4:30pm M-F.  You can register for all programs in person/phone as per the hours above or on-line 24 hours a day at: http://www.carleton.ca/athletics/programs/index.html.  For pro-rated prices (if you are joining part way through the term) contact the office for details.  Note that you should always check in at the Tuck Shop and get a hand stamp or wristband.  This is to ensure that only members are accessing the facilities and will help keep your fees down.  If you are asked to leave your card at the Tuck Shop, please do so.  Your cooperation is appreciated!

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  Is the pool closed for the entire month of April, like last year?  Avid Swimmer

Dear A. Swimmer:  Last year was an anomaly due to repair work required on the diving towers.  This year that shut down will be the usual 2.5 weeks from late April to early May.  The pool closes 6pm Fri Apr 23rd and re-opens 6:30am Mon May 10th.

Dear Coach:  What programs will be offered this Spring and Summer?  A Planner

Dear A. Planner:  The three Earlybird groups and Whitecaps will be offered in Spring/Summer, except that the 8:30am Earlybirds only runs for May-June.  Full details with dates and costs will be announced shortly.

Dear Coach:  Is it legal to do breaststroke (whip) kick (instead of dolphin kick) with fly?  Wanna-be Flyer

Dear W.-b. Flyer:  In Masters competition it is legal to do whip kick in a butterfly race (or the fly part of an IM).  However, in age group (non-Masters) competition, you must use a dolphin kick.

Dear Coach:  I have trouble with the breathing patterns you give us when we do freestyle pull.  Any tips?  Out of Breathe

Dear O. o. Breathe:  The key to the breathing pattern drills is to keep relaxed.  Keeping your stroke smooth and relaxed will require less oxygen.  After you inhale, hold your breath until 2-3 strokes before you will be taking your next breath.  Then exhale all the way out fairly hard, so that there will be lots of room in your lungs for your next inhalation.
