Locker Room Renovations
As many of you may already be aware, the locker rooms are undergoing major renovations this summer.  Those of you with permanent lockers should already have received instructions if your locker needs to be emptied -- lockers must be emptied by Tue Jun 15th.  Shortly after that the women's locker room will be closed and the women will be using the front half of the men's change room.  The men will use the back half of the change room.  Pay close attention to the signs once the renovations are underway, as the women will be using what is now the entrance to the men's change room!!  Once the women's locker room is finished, the women will move back upstairs and renovations will then be done on the men's locker room.  The whole process will take about two months.  Your cooperation is appreciated!

Workout Cancellation
There will be no Masters Whitecaps workout on Thu July 1st due to the Canada Day holiday.  There is just one Public Swim on that date from 11:45am to 3:30pm.  (The Earlybirds workouts are not affected by the Canada Day Holiday.)  There is a workout from 9-10am ONLY on Sat July 3rd.

Saturday Workouts
Just a reminder of the Saturday schedule for Spring/Summer:
May/June: swim workouts offered 8-9am or 9-10am (Child Safety Supervision 9-10am ONLY)
July/August: swim workout offered 9-10am only (no Safety Supervision offered) -- starting Sat Jul 3rd

Swim to Athens Challenge and Jamboree
Everyone who swims at Carleton is encouraged to write their total distance (in lengths) in the book by the deep end drinking fountain every day.  The goal is to reach Athens (some 7738km) in time for the opening ceremonies of the Olympics!  In conjunction with this challenge, the pool staff are hosting a jamboree on Fri Jun 25th 1:15-4:30pm.  During this time there will be stroke correction available, as well as lifeguard situations, aqua-fit, synchro swimming and a recreational swim.  Watch for signs with the full details or ask the pool staff for more information.  All Carleton members/staff/students are welcome.

George in the News!
Martin Cleary of the Ottawa Citizen interviewed George just before he left for Masters Worlds in Riccione.  There was a great article in the paper on Monday, June 7th.  If you missed it, there's a copy on the bulletin board (currently under renovation -- we're getting a larger board!) or you can check it out at: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com/Cit040607G1.jpg (top part of article with photo) and http://carletonmasters.tripod.com/Cit040607G2.jpg (bottom part of article).
There are some details on how Mike and George did in the results section of this newsletter (see below).

KOS Volunteers Needed
For the fourth time, I have volunteered to organize the swim at the Kids of Steel Triathlon to be held Sunday, July 11th at the Uplands Base (outdoor pool).  I need about 5 assistants to help with lining up the kids and counting lengths.  The time commitment is around 3 hours from approx 8-11am.  You get a free T-shirt and refreshments.  Please let me know if you are interested.  One or two more volunteers are needed!

Masters Swim Mini Swim Camp / Clinic June 19-20th
The Masters swim clinic will be held on Saturday, June 19th, 5-7pm (7:30-8:30pm video feedback) and Sunday, June 20th, 9-11am.  The camp is nearly full, but I have a few spaces for those who want to work on back and fly (with or without videotaping) on Saturday, and/or turns and fly, or just turns on Sunday.  For Carleton Masters, costs are: $50 for both days, $30 for 1-day, plus $20 for videotaping.  For non-Carleton swimmers, costs are: $70 for both days, $40 for 1 day, plus $30 for videotaping.  If you are interested, please reply indicating whether you'll attend one day or both, if you want to be videotaped, and on which day, and what stroke(s)/skills you'd like to work on.  Contact me ASAP if you want to participate.

Spring Session
There is still room in all groups, except that Child Safety Supervision for May/June is full.  If you are planning to swim this term, please register ASAP.  You can call the Athletics Office at 520-4480 8:30am-4:30pm M-F or register on-line at: https://secure.e-registernow.com/cgi-bin/mkpayment.cgi?state=298.  For pro-rated prices, contact the office.

Swimmer Notes

Did you know?: Marie-Odile (8:30am Earlybirds)'s husband, David Chernushenko, is the Green Party candidate for Ottawa Centre!

Punctuality:  While I recognize that due to various commitments, not everyone can make it to the pool on time, I've had a few requests from frustrated swimmers to ask that you arrive on time if at all possible.  If you are late, please do your best to join your lane-mates without causing disruption to the lane.  Thanks!

Carleton Swim Suits:  Several have asked for more details on the suits, so here's the scoop.  The suits will be TYR brand, polyester (long lasting) training suits in black with "CARLETON" in white across the chest (women) or buttocks (men).  The men's suits will be identical to those we got in the Spring, and the women's will be similar but will have thinner shoulder straps that are black with white trim.  Men's suits come in waist sizes and women's in chest sizes.  The men's suits fit a little on the small size, I'm told.  Cost in the Spring was $43 for women and $24.50 for men.  Prices may be slightly higher this time.  We plan to have the suits delivered in the September time frame.  Let me know ASAP if you are interested.

Nose Clips for Sale:  Cost $5.  Contact Lynn if you are interested.

Spring Session Information
This month everyone has an opportunity to participate in some timed swims.  On Tue Jun 15th or Wed Jun 16th everyone will have a chance to do a timed 800 or 1500m freestyle.  From June 17th-30th you will have a chance to be timed in shorter events -- ask your coach for more details.  Tue Jun 29th and Fri Jul 2nd will be the last days of the Spring session where the coaches will add some extra "fun" to the workouts.

If you have any questions about the Masters program, please don't hesitate to ask me or your coach.
