Locker Room Renovations
Here's an update on the locker room renovations from: http://www.carleton.ca/athletics/facilities.html (check this page for updates).
"On Tuesday, June 29, the women's locker room will be temporarily relocated to the front half of the men's locker room (main level) in the first stage of major renovations to both locker rooms. While work on the women's locker room goes on, the men will use the back end of their locker room with the entrance to this section located in the squash court hallway, across from squash court #1. This stage of the renovation will take approximately one month and will be followed by a month of work in the men's locker room area. The project is scheduled to finish in early September."

Workout Cancellations / Changes
There will be no Masters Whitecaps workout on Thu July 1st due to the Canada Day holiday.  There is just one Public Swim on that date from 11:45am to 3:30pm.  Workouts will run as usual on Fri Jul 2nd (6:30-7:30am, 7:30-8:30am and 8:30-9:30am) and Sat Jul 3rd (9-10am ONLY).  Note that Fri Jul 2nd will be the last 8:30-9:30am workout until the Fall.

Saturday Workouts
Just a reminder of the Saturday schedule for the Summer: 9-10am only (no Safety Supervision offered) -- starting Sat Jul 3rd.  (Safety supervision is still offered during Whitecaps evening workouts M/Tu/Th 6-7:10pm.)

2005 World Aquatic Championships - Montreal
Tickets are already on sale for the World Aquatic Championships to be held in Montreal July 17-31st, 2005 (i.e. more than a year away).  The Championships include Swimming as well as Waterpolo, Diving, Synchronized Swimming, and Open Water Swimming.  The (pool) swimming runs July 24-31st.  Note that this is not a Masters competition -- it will include swimmers like Ian Thorpe, i.e. the fastest in the World!  Derek Baas (Whitecaps "B") has kindly volunteered to look into getting a group rate for some tickets if there is enough interest (and enough advance planners!).  Before contacting Derek, please have a look at the web site: http://www.montreal2005.org/choix_intro.html, as it has the full schedule and prices, etc.  Note that a ticket to see all the swimming sessions is in the $800 range, while tickets for one session start at about $20 (for the heats -- finals are more expensive).  Once you have an idea of the sessions you'd like to see, contact Derek at dbaas@edc.ca

Swim to Athens Challenge
Everyone who swims at Carleton is encouraged to write their total distance (in lengths) in the book by the deep end drinking fountain every day.  The goal is to reach Athens (7738km) in time for the opening ceremonies of the Olympics!

KOS Volunteers Needed
For the fourth time, I have volunteered to organize the swim at the Kids of Steel Triathlon to be held Sunday, July 11th at the Uplands Base (outdoor pool).  I need about 5 assistants to help with lining up the kids and counting lengths.  The time commitment is around 3 hours from approx 8-11am.  You get a free T-shirt and refreshments.  Please let me know if you are interested.  I have enough volunteers for the swim, but more volunteers are needed for registration, bike, run, etc.

Masters Swim Mini Swim Camp / Clinic June 19-20th
The Masters swim clinic was held on Saturday, June 19th, 5-7pm (7:30-8:30pm video feedback) and Sunday, June 20th, 9-11am.  Thanks very much to those who supported the camp, despite our logistical and technical challenges!  We raised $200 for the Masters team.

Summer Session (July/August)
There is still room in all groups for the Summer session.  You can call the Athletics Office at 520-4480 8:30am-4:30pm M-F for pro-rated prices.

Swimmer Notes

New Pullbuoys / Straps: New Masters "Blaster Buoy" pullbuoys and straps arrived last week.  However, the straps stretch too much when wet, and the pullbuoys tend to come apart.  We're following up with the supplier -- your patience is appreciated!

Letter to the Editor:  Sean (7:30am Earlybirds) had his letter to the editor published in the Fri Jun 25th Citizen.  The first paragraph can be viewed at: http://www.canada.com/ottawa/ottawacitizen/news/letters/story.html?id=1cbb3e05-ca6b-4c71-938d-2a804a7aefb0

Carleton Swim Suits:  Several have asked for more details on the suits, so here's the scoop.  The suits will be TYR brand, polyester (long lasting) training suits in black with "CARLETON" in white across the chest (women) or buttocks (men).  The men's suits will be identical to those we got in the Spring, and the women's will be similar but will have thinner shoulder straps that are black with white trim.  Men's suits come in waist sizes and women's in chest sizes.  The men's suits fit a little on the small size, I'm told.  Cost in the Spring was $43 for women and $24.50 for men.  Prices may be slightly higher this time.  We plan to have the suits delivered in the September time frame.  Let me know ASAP if you are interested.

Nose Clips for Sale:  Cost $5.  Contact Lynn if you are interested.

Spring Session Information
This month everyone has an opportunity to participate in some timed swims.  Talk to your coach if you haven't had a chance yet!  Tue Jun 29th is the last day of the Spring session for Whitecaps, while Fri Jul 2nd is the last day of the Spring session for the Earlybirds.  Normally, the last day of the session is the "fun day", with relays, etc.  This will be held Tue Jun 29th for the evening group.  However, for the morning groups, it will be held Wed Jun 30th, as an informal survey indicates that attendance will be very light on Fri Jul 2nd!

If you have any questions about the Masters program, please don't hesitate to ask me or your coach.

Here are the latest attendance statistics for the Spring term.  Note that attendance is taken on weekdays only (not on Saturdays).  There are now just 4 swimmers with perfect weekday attendance!

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  Is it better to use free (flutter) kick or fly (dolphin) kick after I push off the wall on my freestyle turns?  Working on Turns

Dear W. o. Turns:  Generally, dolphin kick is better, as (for most people) it is faster.  If your flutter kick is faster, experiment with both.  Keep in mind that, after pushing off the wall, you want to hold a streamlined position (without kicking) until you start to lose momentum.  Then add in the kick (quick and small amplitude to keep as streamlined as possible) and then power to the surface with your first stroke.

Dear Coach:  I couldn't attend last weekend's swim clinic due to a previous commitment.  When will the next clinic be held?  Want Stroke Correction

Dear W. S. Correction:  We usually host a clinic about once per year in the June timeframe.  Your other option, in the meantime, is to consider private or semi-private lessons.
