To:  Carleton Coaches (11 addresses)

Bcc: Those Registered for Winter/Spring/Summer 2004 plus "Alumni":  6:30am Earlybirds (44 Members), 7:30am Earlybirds (49 addresses), 8:30am Earlybirds (17 addresses), 6pm Whitecaps (96 addresses), Nightcaps (29 addresses), Masters "Alumni" (33 members).

Locker Room Renovations
The locker room renovations are underway, with the women relocated to the front half of the men's change room.  There have been several complaints about the lack of cleanliness in what is now the women's change room, and the cleaning staff are working to resolve this issue.  I've also forwarded a request for more mirrors.

Workout Cancellations / Changes
There will be no Masters Earlybirds or Whitecaps workout on Mon Aug 2nd due to the Civic holiday.  There is just one Public Swim on that date from 11:45am to 3:30pm.  Workout will run as usual on Sat July 31st (9-10am).  Note that there are no more 8:30-9:30am MWF workouts until the Fall.

Saturday Workouts
Just a reminder of the Saturday schedule for the Summer: 9-10am only (no Safety Supervision offered) -- starting Sat Jul 3rd.  (Safety supervision is still offered during Whitecaps evening workouts M/Tu/Th 6-7:10pm.)

2005 World Aquatic Championships - Montreal
Tickets are already on sale for the World Aquatic Championships to be held in Montreal July 17-31st, 2005 (i.e. more than a year away).  The Championships include Swimming as well as Waterpolo, Diving, Synchronized Swimming, and Open Water Swimming.  The (pool) swimming runs July 24-31st.  Note that this is not a Masters competition -- it will include swimmers like Ian Thorpe, i.e. the fastest in the World!  Derek Baas (Whitecaps "B") has kindly volunteered to look into getting a group rate for some tickets if there is enough interest (and enough advance planners!).  Before contacting Derek, please have a look at the web site: http://www.montreal2005.org/choix_intro.html, as it has the full schedule and prices, etc.  Note that a ticket to see all the swimming sessions is in the $800 range, while tickets for one session start at about $20 (for the heats -- finals are more expensive).  Once you have an idea of the sessions you'd like to see, contact Derek at dbaas@edc.ca

Swim to Athens Challenge
Everyone who swims at Carleton is encouraged to write their total distance (in lengths) in the book by the deep end drinking fountain every day.  The goal is to reach Athens (7738km) in time for the opening ceremonies of the Olympics!

Summer Session (July/August) and Class Audit
There is still room in all groups for the Summer session.  You can call the Athletics Office at 520-4480 8:30am-4:30pm M-F for pro-rated prices.  (You cannot register on-line as the session officially started in May!)
Note that the pool staff will be auditing those attending Masters at some workouts in the next two weeks, and again in August.  Your cooperation in giving your name so that it can be checked against the class list is appreciated!

Summer Water Polo League
Blake (Whitecaps "A" Coach) is the convenor of this summer's Carleton fun co-ed water polo league for all ages.  No experience is necessary!  Sessions are Wed 6-8pm and Sun 5-7pm until Wed Sept 1st (no session Sun Aug 1st).  Cost for Carleton Members is $34.24 (including GST).  Contact Blake for more information.

Swimmer Notes

Condolences:  Our condolences to Gary B (7:30am Earlybirds) on the death of his wife.  Several of us attended the visitation last week.  In lieu of flowers a scholarship fund has been set up for their two teenage boys and the Carleton Masters team is contributing the $200 profit from the recent swim clinic.

New Pullbuoys / Straps:  New Masters "Blaster Buoy" pullbuoys and straps arrived last week.  However, the straps stretch too much when wet, and the pullbuoys tend to come apart.  We're following up with the supplier -- your patience is appreciated!

Labatt's 24 Hour Relay:  Heather A and Brenda K (both 6:30am Earlybirds) are organizing a 20 person team for the Labatt's 24 hour running relay 11am Sat Aug 14th to 11am Sun Aug 15th.  Each team member will be asked to raise $100 for charity.  For more details contact Brenda (Brenda.Koekkoek@ec.gc.ca) or check out the event web site: http://www.ottawa24hourrelay.com.

Carleton Swim Suits:  The suit order is going in next week -- this is your last chance to order for September delivery (and suits will not be ordered for another year)!!  Several have asked for more details on the suits, so here's the scoop.  The suits will be TYR brand, polyester (long lasting) training suits in black with "CARLETON" in white across the chest (women) or buttocks (men).  The men's suits will be identical to those we got in the Spring, and the women's will be similar but will have thinner shoulder straps that are black with white trim.  Men's suits come in waist sizes and women's in chest sizes.  The men's suits fit a little on the small size, I'm told.  Cost in the Spring was $43 for women and $24.50 for men.  Prices may be slightly higher this time.  We plan to have the suits delivered in the September time frame.  Let me know ASAP if you are interested.

Nose Clips for Sale:  Cost $5.  Contact Lynn if you are interested.

Letter to the Editor:  Sean (7:30am Earlybirds) had his letter to the editor published in the Fri Jun 25th Citizen.  You can view his letter (a bit out of date now that the election is over, but better late than never) at: http://carletonmasters.tripod.com/RiddellArticle.html.

Summer Session Information
The summer session is now underway.  Attendance will be reported next time.  For the workouts the first half of this coming week, swimmers have the option to do a lactate tolerance (sprint) set.  Ask your coach for details.

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  I've been struggling in workout lately to do times that were easy for me in the Fall.  However, when I participated in the time trials (at the end of a workout where I was really swimming poorly) I did best times.  Can you explain?  Confused Swimmer

Dear C. Swimmer:  The energy systems you use for regular training and for racing are different (aerobic vs anaerobic), so that would explain how you were able to do fast timed swims after a slower workout.  As for the general decline in how well you're swimming in workout, we need to get you to vary your training more.  Quite often we tend to get into a bit of a rut and swim at more or less the same speed all the time.  Your body will adapt to that and you'll stay at that speed.  To get faster, you need to "shock" the system with more variety.  Make sure that you start out at a very moderate pace when we descend or build, and make sure you incorporate some sprinting regularly.  (There are optional lactate tolerance workouts this week which are just what you need!)

Dear Coach:  You tell me it's very important to look down at the bottom of the pool when I'm swimming freestyle.  However, I often do open water swims.  How can I swim straight in open water if I'm looking down all the time?  Beginner Triathlete

Dear B. Triathlete:  When swimming in open water you do need to look up occasionally to "sight".  You need to practice looking forward as you breathe (or just before or just after) in such a way that you minimize the time you spend with your head up so as to impact your body position as little as possible.  This is easiest if you can find very large landmarks to head for.  Check out the course ahead of time (even from the shore) and try to pick a large tree or boathouse (or something similar) that is in the same direction as the small marker or beach that you are actually heading for.  If you are having a really hard time figuring out where you are, you can always add in a couple of strokes of breaststroke to look ahead.  As you become more comfortable with swimming in open water, you should be able to sight less often.
