Locker Room Renovations
The locker room renovations are underway, with the women relocated to the front half of the men's change room.  If all goes well, the women will move back upstairs on Monday, August 9th.  Check for updates at: http://www.carleton.ca/athletics/facilities.html

Workout Cancellations / Changes
There will be no Masters Earlybirds or Whitecaps workout on Mon Aug 2nd due to the Civic holiday.  There is just one Public Swim on that date from 11:45am to 3:30pm.  Workout will run as usual on Sat July 31st (9-10am).  Note that there are no more 8:30-9:30am MWF workouts until the Fall.

Saturday Workouts
Just a reminder of the Saturday schedule for the Summer: 9-10am only (no Safety Supervision offered).  (Safety supervision is still offered during Whitecaps evening workouts M/Tu/Th 6-7:10pm.)

Thanks to KOS Volunteers!
Many thanks to the great team of volunteers who helped with the swim at the Uplands KOS Race on Sun Jul 11th.  Andre (Susan N-Y's son) and Christina did a great job of getting the kids their "chips", and Heather M, Jess, Lisa H and Dave B ensured that all the kids swam the right number of lengths.  The weather cooperated and fun was had by all.  Lisa and Dave both won volunteer draw prizes:  Lisa won a $150 watch donated by La Maison d'Or (owned by Brent Harden, a sometimes 7:30am Earlybird swimmer), and Dave won a golf shirt and golf balls donated by Oracle.

Upcoming Nearby Open Water Races
There is a race in Deep River on Sat Jul 31st (details below -- everything you could possibly want to know, except how far the swim actually is!), and a 4km race at Meech Lake on Sat Aug 14th.  You don't have to be registered with MSO to participate in either of these races.

2005 World Aquatic Championships - Montreal
Tickets are already on sale for the World Aquatic Championships to be held in Montreal July 17-31st, 2005 (i.e. more than a year away).  The Championships include Swimming as well as Waterpolo, Diving, Synchronized Swimming, and Open Water Swimming.  The (pool) swimming runs July 24-31st.  Note that this is not a Masters competition -- it will include swimmers like Ian Thorpe, i.e. the fastest in the World!  Derek Baas (Whitecaps "B") has kindly volunteered to look into getting a group rate for some tickets if there is enough interest (and enough advance planners!).  Before contacting Derek, please have a look at the web site: http://www.montreal2005.org/choix_intro.html, as it has the full schedule and prices, etc.  Note that a ticket to see all the swimming sessions is in the $800 range, while tickets for one session start at about $20 (for the heats -- finals are more expensive).  Once you have an idea of the sessions you'd like to see, contact Derek at dbaas@edc.ca

Swim to Athens Challenge
Everyone who swims at Carleton is encouraged to write their total distance (in lengths) in the book by the deep end drinking fountain every day.  The goal is to reach Athens (7738km) in time for the opening ceremonies of the Olympics!

Summer Session (July/August) and Audit
There is still room in all groups for the Summer session.  You can call the Athletics Office at 520-4480 8:30am-4:30pm M-F for pro-rated prices.  (You cannot register on-line as the session officially started in May!)
Last week's audit went well -- thanks to everyone for their cooperation!

Summer Water Polo League
Blake (Whitecaps "A" Coach) is the convenor of this summer's Carleton fun co-ed water polo league for all ages.  No experience is necessary!  Sessions are Wed 6-8pm and Sun 5-7pm until Wed Sept 1st (no session Sun Aug 1st).  Cost for Carleton Members is $34.24 (including GST).  Contact Blake for more information.

Fall Program Registration
Registration for Fall Athletics Programs is scheduled to start Tuesday, August 3rd.  Booklets with full details should be available shortly.  Some of the groups (especially 7:30am and Nightcaps) tend to fill up in the Fall, so register early to avoid disappointment.

Swimmer Notes

Congratulations!!!:  Lots of exciting "life events" are coming up for these morning Masters swimmers...
Mary Beth, Jenn E, Moe, and Julie D-F are all expecting babies!  Mary Beth and Jenn E are both due in early August.  Dawn C is getting married on August 21st, and Mits (also Whitecaps "B" coach) has just announced his engagement to Tanya (not a swimmer!) with a wedding planned for Fall 2005.

Pool Set-Up Reminder:  Swimmers are reminded to let the pool staff know if there are any issues with pool set up.  Please do not attempt to tighten the lane ropes yourself -- ask your coach or a staff member.  Also, if you choose to start your deep end workout before the backstroke flags are set up, watch your arms and head!  The staff do try to put the flags in without interfering, but occasionally an arm or head gets in the way!

Please Shower before your Swim:  With the recent hot weather, swimmers are reminded to shower before they swim.

Labatt's 24 Hour Relay:  Heather A and Brenda K (both 6:30am Earlybirds) are organizing a 20 person team for the Labatt's 24 hour running relay 11am Sat Aug 14th to 11am Sun Aug 15th.  Each team member will be asked to raise $100 for charity.  For more details contact Brenda (Brenda.Koekkoek@ec.gc.ca) or check out the event web site: http://www.ottawa24hourrelay.com.

Nose Clips for Sale:  Cost $5.  Contact Lynn if you are interested.

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  Why doesn't the 6:30am MWF Masters group run in the Fall?  Wondering

Dear Wondering:  The 6:00-7:30am MWF deep end time slot is used by the Varsity swim team during the Varsity season from September to February, thus the pool is not available for Masters.  However, for those able to do the Varsity workouts, there is a "High Intensity" Masters program for those who want to train with the Varsity team.  Note that you must be able to do 100s freestyle repeats on 1:45 (including rest) and 100s of other strokes and IM repeats on 2:00.

Dear Coach:  Why am I swimming sideways in the deep end these day?  Confused

Dear Confused:  A few weeks ago the water circulation was increased to keep the water cleaner with the additional use over the summer.  One of the jets is badly placed in that it pushes water from the diving well towards the swimming lanes.  Pool maintenance staff have been working to reduce the problems this jet has been causing and you should have noticed a definite improvement this past week.  If you notice any additional problems with the water circulation, let you coach or a pool staff member know.
