Locker Room Renovations
The locker room renovations are underway, with the women relocated to the front half of the men's change room.  Last I heard (10 days ago), the women will be moving back upstairs around Wednesday, August 11th.  The renovated locker room looks very nice!  Check for updates at: http://www.carleton.ca/athletics/facilities.html

Saturday Workouts
Just a reminder of the Saturday schedule for the Summer: 9-10am only (no Safety Supervision offered).  (Safety supervision is still offered during Whitecaps evening workouts M/Tu/Th 6-7:10pm.)

Masters Swimming Ontario Board
MSO is looking for swimmers to get involved in the Board of Directors.  If you're registered with MSO and interested in getting involved, you can find the application form at: http://www.mastersswimmingontario.ca/pdf/fm.nomination.pdf.

Upcoming Nearby Open Water Races / Swims
As well as the 4km race at Meech Lake on Sat Aug 14th, there's a 10km "fun" swim from Wakefield to Cantley on Sun Aug 15th.  Details below.  You don't have to be registered with MSO to participate in either of these races.

Swim to Athens Challenge
Everyone who swims at Carleton is encouraged to write their total distance (in lengths) in the book by the deep end drinking fountain every day.  The goal is to reach Athens (7738km) in time for the opening ceremonies of the Olympics!   I think we will need to swim 250km each this week to make it on time!!

Summer Session (August)
There is still room in all groups for the Summer session which ends Friday, September 3rd.  You can call the Athletics Office at 520-4480 8:30am-4:30pm M-F for pro-rated prices.  (You cannot register on-line as the session officially started in May!)

Swimmer Notes

Birth Announcement:  Jenn E (7:30 and 8:30am Earlybirds) swam a short workout on Wed Jul 28th and went into labour late that evening.  Gillian Pomona Evans Bennett arrived at 2:55am Fri Jul 30th (1 week early), weighing in at a mighty 8 pounds 2 ounces.  Jenn reports that swimming through the pregnancy made the birth go very smoothly, which the other expectant moms will be happy to hear!  She plans to return to the pool with a young spectator for the Fall session.

Wedding Announcement:  Pete L (Whitecaps "A") and Carol S (x-Earlybirds) were married on Sat Jul 24th in a small ceremony (40 people) held in Carol's parents' backyard.  We wish them all the best.  This was a well kept secret until after the fact!

Pregnancy:  Congratulations to Andrea C, Derek B (both Whitecaps "B") and Freddy (Safety Supervision) who are expecting a new addition to their family in February 2005.

Carleton Masters Swimmer at the Olympics!:  George (Whitecaps "B") is the Carleton Masters' sole representative at the Athens Olympics.  He is there assisting the Canadian team as he speaks Greek!

Vacation Woes:  It seems that Summer 2004 is not a great time for Carleton Masters swimmers to go on vacation.  Sean (7:30am Earlybirds) had his canoe fall off the roof of his car and turned around and came home before even getting to his vacation destination.  John W (Whitecaps "A") and his wife cut short their vacation to Algonquin Park due to his back problems and awful weather.  Francois A (7:30am Earlybirds) and his family came back a week early from their vacation due to his wife breaking her ankle.  And Joanie, Sam and Ben (Whitecaps "A" and Safety Supervision) got an extra long vacation while waiting for Don (also Whitecaps "A") to recover from surgery in PEI to remove his appendix!

Nose Clips for Sale:  Cost $5.  Contact Lynn if you are interested.

Summer Session Information
The summer session is now well underway.  Time trials will be coming up soon.  On August 17th and 18th everyone will have the opportunity to do a timed 800 or 1500 freestyle.  Then between August 19th and the end of the session, short distance time trials are offered for all those who are interested.  Ask your coach for more details.

Ask the Coach

Dear Coach:  I am a triathlete who has been swimming with Masters for a while now.  I've found that my other strokes have improved significantly, but I still feel there's room for lots of improvement in my freestyle.  What do you recommend?  A Triathlete

Dear A. Triathlete:  It's common to plateau from time to time and feel like you're not improving very much.  Things that you can do to kick-start your body into improving include:
- move to a faster lane so that you'll have more of a challenge (you could do this only on freestyle days)
- take advantage of the lactate tolerance sets this week to do some speed work (this often gets you out of a rut)
- take some private or semi-private lessons to focus on technique (even a world class swimmer is less than 10% efficient!)

Dear Coach:  Why do I get two copies of the newsletter every time?  Another Coach

Dear A. Coach:  As you are a coach, you are in two different e-mail groups, the coach group and the group for the program you swim with.  When I send out the newsletter, I can send to at most 100 recipients at once (a Sympatico restriction), so I actually send it out three times, including a few groups each time.  The two groups you are in happen to fall into two different mailings.

Dear Coach:  What is the rule for freestyle turns?  Do I have to touch the wall with both hands if I don't do a flip turn?  Not Yet a Proficient Flipper

Dear N.Y.a.P. Flipper:  In freestyle as long as you touch the wall with some part of your body (foot, hand, head, etc.) that's fine!

Dear Coach:  As not everyone in my lane is exactly the same speed, I sometimes lap other swimmers in my lane during longer swims.  What should I do?  A Speedy Swimmer

Dear A.S. Swimmer:  The lanes at Carleton are plenty wide enough for you to pass someone in your lane without either of you having to stop.  Normally you should swim near the lane rope so that there is 1/3 of the lane (in the middle) available.  Thus to pass someone, you move to the middle of the lane and can swim by them without running into oncoming traffic.  It may take more than one length to pass someone, but that's fine.  As long as everyone in your lane is aware of where everyone else is (and you all should be!), this should go smoothly.  Practice this in warm up!

Dear Coach:  Should I push off the wall with both hands above my head, or one hand or no hands?  Just Learning

Dear J. Learning:  You should always push off the wall with both hands above your head and your elbows squeezing your ears for maximum streamlining.  This applies to all strokes, including backstroke!
