M.A.Sc. Biomedical Engineering with Specialization in Bioinformatics

Have a bachelor’s degree with a specialization or a major (or equivalent) in engineering, science, computer science, or a related discipline, with a minimum admission average of 75% (B+).

Note: International candidates must check the admission equivalencies for the diploma they received in their country of origin.

Demonstrate a good academic performance in previous studies as shown by official transcripts, research reports, abstracts or any other documents demonstrating research skills.
Identify at least one professor who is willing to supervise your research and thesis. We recommend that you contact potential thesis supervisors as soon as possible.
Be sponsored into the collaborative specialization by a faculty member of the collaborative program, normally the thesis supervisor, who must be appointed, cross-appointed or stand as an adjunct at the primary program.

For Carleton University, the requirements for admission to the master’s in the Collaborative Program in Bioinformatics are as follows:

prior admission to the master’s program in one of the supporting units participating in the program.
a letter of recommendation from the participating faculty member of the Collaborative Program, which both recommends admission and indicates the willingness of the faculty member to supervise the candidate’s research program in Bioinformatics.

Applicants must be able to understand and fluently speak the language of instruction (English) in the program to which they are applying. Proof of linguistic proficiency may be required.
Applicants whose first language is neither French nor English must provide proof of proficiency in the language of instruction.
Language tests recognized by the University of Ottawa:
- TOEFL: 550 (Paper-based) or 79-80 (Internet-based); or
- IELTS: Overall 6.5 – Individual 5.0 (Paper-based or internet-based); or
- An equivalent language test.
Language tests recognized by Carleton University:
- Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL) 70
- TOEFL: 580 (Paper-based) or 86 overall (Internet-based) with a minimum of 20 in reading & listening and 22 in speaking & writing.
- IELTS (academic): 6.5 overall with a minimum of 6.0 in each category
- Pearson Test of English (PTE- Academic): 60 with a minimum of 60 in each category

To be accepted into the collaborative program candidates must be admitted to the master’s program in Biomedical Engineering.
Candidates must apply to the primary program and indicate in their application for admission to the master’s program in Biomedical Engineering that they wish to be accepted into the collaborative-specialization in Bioinformatics.
