OCIBME is a multi-disciplinary institute, which welcomes applicants from a wide variety of academic backgrounds, including: engineering, science, computer science, biomedical sciences, health sciences, or a related discipline.
How do you start ?
Start by deciding what areas of research interest you and find out who is working in that area. Refer to the “Faculty” page to find out what professors are working on. Then you may proceed to the Application Instructions below.
You are required to make a choice between two universities, based on your selected program. If you are interested in more than one area of study, you should apply to the university offering your first choice of program. If you wish to be considered at both UOttawa and Carleton University, then you must apply separately to both institutions.
Non-Resident students (International Students) — please refer to the International Students section below before proceeding.
Applications for admission to graduate programs may be submitted at any time. However, prospective students who apply early increase their chances of securing financial support for their graduate studies. In addition, applications for admission from outside Canada should be completed at least five months before the desired date of admission in order for students to make the necessary visa arrangements.

Applicants should refer to the Carleton University Graduate Calendar or University of Ottawa Graduate Calendar for program Admission Requirements, including Language Requirements.
Note for the M.Eng. Biomedical Engineering with Concentration in Clinical Engineering, students must apply and be accepted into this concentration. Participation in this concentration requires an academic supervisor at your home institution and a clinical engineering supervisor. Together these supervisors that would oversee the Clinical Engineering Internship and Clinical Engineering Project; both of the Clinical Engineering Internship and Project are restricted to students in the concentration.

International Students
An International Student is a Non-Canadian Resident who needs a student’s visa to study in Canada.
This Institute receives a large number of applications each year from well-qualified international students for an extremely limited number of positions. Only students who are in the top 5% of their graduating class and fulfilling all the requirements should consider applying.
The academic year starts in September and students generally first register in the Fall semester. To indicate relative time guidelines applicants should note that, depending upon their country of application, it can take up to 6 months or more to obtain a visa to study in Canada which will not be issued without an official letter of acceptance from the university of the supervisor and evidence of adequate financial support. The universities and/or the individual professors generally make their decisions concerning financial support/aid by the middle of April.
For registration in September, in most cases the student’s file should be complete by March 1st. Other applicants will be processed but will have little prospect of receiving financial support.
Visa students studying in Ontario are charged tuition fees of approximately $20−25,000 per year. (See Carleton University or The University of Ottawa tuition page for more accurate information.) We estimate that a Visa student will need a minimum of $37,000 (Canadian funds) per annum to cover tuition and living expenses. Visa students may work in Canada only as teaching and research assistants in the universities where they are enrolled.
